INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Racing against the top crews in the nation, the Patriot League champion Boston University women's rowing team opened its eighth NCAA Championship appearance at Eagle Creek Park on Friday with all three boats advancing to the C-D semifinals.
BU was one of 22 schools represented at the competition, and only the top 12 crews in each event were able to clinch a spot in the A-B semifinals.
Coxed by senior Sarah Specht and stroked by junior Claire Richer, the varsity eight boat faced the difficult task of racing against four ranked boats in an opening heat with just the top two avoiding Friday afternoon's repechage race.
No. 3 Brown and No. 6 Washington pulled away quickly and beat No. 15 Indiana by more than nine seconds to send the Terriers to the repechage. In the afternoon, BU needed to finish in the top two to reach Saturday's A-B semifinals but again was confronted by multiple ranked boats.
No. 10 Notre Dame and No. 15 Indiana edged San Diego and No. 14 Washington State to claim the top two slots. The Terriers started strong through the first 500 meters to grab leads over CAA champion Northeastern and C-USA champion Oklahoma, but once the Fighting Irish and Hoosiers pulled away, BU focused its attention on Saturday's semifinal race.
The second varsity eight and varsity four boats also faced similar situations and will look to clinch a C semifinal berth on Saturday. The varsity eight boat opens Saturday's schedule at 8:40 a.m.
