BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Playing for the first time in over two weeks, the Boston University suffered a doubleheader sweep at Lehigh Wednesday afternoon to open the Patriot League schedule. With the pair of losses, the Terriers drop to 6-18 (0-2 PL), as the red-hot Mountain Hawks (21-3, 5-0 PL) extend their win streak to 12 games.
Lehigh entered the matchup coming off a three-game sweep of Lafayette in which the Mountain Hawks outscored the Leopards by a combined score of 21-0. They did most of their damage in the first inning of each game, jumping out with a grand slam en route to a 9-1 victory. They followed up in the second go-round with 11 runs off eight hits and two errors in the first for the 11-1 win.
After junior Lauren Hynes (3-7) gave up the bases-clearing homer, sophomore Makinna Akers stepped in and limited the Mountain Hawks to just one run in the next 4.2 innings. The Terriers though were unable to mount a rally, leaving at least one runner on base in all six innings and reaching home plate just once.
Sophomore Moriah Connolly led off the third with a bunt single and eventually reached third behind a stolen base and classmate Brittany Younan's single. Freshman Emma Wong cut the deficit to four runs with an infield RBI single against 2014 Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Emily Bausher (10-2), who one-hit BU last season.
The Mountain Hawks put the game away in the sixth by scoring four runs off three hits and four errors.
In the second contest, junior Melanie Russell made her first appearance in the circle since Feb. 15 due to injury and went 1.1 innings. Hynes held Lehigh to one unearned run and five hits in the final 2.2 innings.
BU avoided the shutout in the fourth against Christine Campbell (9-1) when senior Emily Felbaum delivered a one-out double to left center to plate classmate Mandy Fernandez.
The Terriers will remain on the road and resume Patriot League action at Holy Cross on April 4-5. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for 12 p.m.
