This summer, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.
Coming in at No. 7 in this year’s Terrier Twelve is the women’s tennis team celebrating head coach Lesley Sheehan’s 30th season with the program’s 24th overall conference title and 15th NCAA berth. The season had several other highlights, including junior Johanna Hyoty earning her first career national ranking and sweeping through the top Patriot League year-end awards.
After dethroning nine-time defending PL champion Army West Point in 2014, the Terriers entered the 2015 season with a big target on their backs. They handled the pressure though and as the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament blanked three opponents in one weekend for the first time since 2001.
Freshman Iryna Kostirko had an impressive performance in those three matches to claim Tournament MVP accolades. She posted a combined 6-0 record in both singles and doubles. Her award was one of many for the Terriers this year, as she also received All-Conference First Team accolades alongside Hyoty and junior Lauren Davis.
Sophomore Barbara Rodriguez received second team honors while also being tabbed the first-ever PL Doubles Team of the Year with Hyoty. During the NCAA First Round matchup at No. 12 Oklahoma State, Rodriguez won her first set at the No. 4 slot to become the first Terrier since 2009 to win a set at the NCAAs. She was ahead, 6-2, 2-2, when her match was halted due to the Cowgirls winning the necessary four points to advance.
Ranked as high as No. 122 nationally, Hyoty became the first in the conference since 2003 to sweep both PL Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards in the same season. Named the Northeast region’s ITA/Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sportsmanship & Leadership Award recipient, she compiled a 19-11 singles record this season that included a three-set win over Boston College's then-No. 61 ranked Jessica Wacnik. Other highlight wins came against 2015 MAC champion Miami Ohio's top player and a 2015 All-CUSA First Team honoree from then-No. 70 North Texas.
All of the team’s success came as Sheehan guided the Terriers to a 14-8 record and her 28th double-digit win season in 30 years. The BU Hall of Fame member received her sixth career conference Coach of the Year award. With 364 career victories, she is just 36 away from the 400-win milestone.
