BETHLEHEM, Pa.--A flurry of three-pointers during the third quarter distanced the Lehigh women's basketball team from Boston University and ultimately helped the Mountain Hawks take a 72-48 victory over the Terriers on Saturday afternoon in Stabler Arena.
BU (1-19, 1-9 PL) and Lehigh (13-7, 6-3 PL) played a close first half which featured five ties and five lead changes but a strong showing from long range in the third quarter and capitalizing on Terrier miscues ultimately led to the Lehigh victory.
Sarah Hope went 3-for-4 from beyond the arc to move up to seventh on the BU career 3-pointer list. The junior currently has 150 career 3-pointers and her nine points was the team high against Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks shot 42.6 percent overall and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc on the day while the Terriers finished with a 32.3 shooting percentage.
The biggest difference maker in the game was scoring off of turnovers for Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawks used BU's 16 miscues to score 30 points while the Terriers were only able to turn 18 extra possessions into 13 points.
Both sides got off to a slow start but Payton Hauck, who finished with six points, scored the first basket of the game nearly three minutes into the contest. Both teams went on runs from there, with BU scoring eight straight points to take the lead before Lehigh went on a 12-2 run at the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter to reach their largest lead of the first half, 19-12.
The Terriers answered by scoring 11 straight points to find their largest lead of the contest, 23-19, but a six-point run to end the first half gave Lehigh the slight 30-27 lead at halftime.
Despite back-and-forth play, the Mountain Hawks used three early 3-pointers in the third quarter to begin to pull away from BU and consistent shooting throughout the remainder of the game stopped the Terriers from cutting into the deficit.
BU is back in action on Thursday, Feb. 4 when the Terriers host Navy at 7 p.m. in Case Gym. The game is set to air live on the Patriot League Network.
