NEW YORK - Paced by freshman Paul Luevano's top-20 performance, the Boston University men's cross country team finished 10th at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.
Luevano, the reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Year, continued his outstanding rookie season by finishing 17th with a time of 31:05.44. He will be on the bubble for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. The top four individual finishers not on a qualifying team will advance to that event, held Nov. 19 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
BU totaled 338 points to outpace a majority of the 35-team field, and freshmen were the reason for the Terriers' strong team performance on Friday. Brett Davidson (32:08.24) and Greg Pelose (32:08.58) were next behind their classmate Luevano, coming in 65th and 66th place, respectively. Senior Mitch Russo (32:21.30) was next in 81st, followed by junior Cullin Burdett (32:45.16)in 109th. Sophomore Johnny Kemps (33:23.87) rounded out the group of Terrier harriers in 145th place.
If Luevano does not qualify as an individual, it will conclude his terrific debut season. He posted two victories and four top-five finishes while never finishing outside of the top 17 in any event he raced. The Terriers will now gear up for the indoor track & field season, which begins on Dec. 3 with the BU Season Opener at the Track and Tennis Center.
