Record-Breaking Fundraising Year for BU Athletics
July 15, 2016 | General, Terrier Athletics Fund
Thanks to the generous support of Boston University alumni, parents and friends, the Department of Athletics has completed a record-breaking fundraising year.
BU Athletics donors contributed a total of $3.53 million in the 2016-17 academic year, Director of Athletics Drew Marrochello announced. That total includes $1.6 million raised through the Annual Fund – an increase of greater than 50 percent from last year – and over $1.92 million in gifts made to capital projects and endowments.
"We are so grateful for the passion and generosity of the Boston University Athletics community to support all 24 of our varsity teams," Marrochello said. "This commitment from Terriers everywhere allows us to continually enhance the first-class experience we offer our 600 student-athletes."
The year was punctuated by several transformative gifts that assisted in the completion of various initiatives, including the following highlights:
Athletics also saw an increase in the overall number of contributions made, exceeding 8,200 gifts. This more than doubles the number of gifts made during the previous fiscal year. Alumni participation also grew significantly, despite a declining trend nationally for this segment to give back to their alma mater.
"Supporters of BU Athletics generously demonstrated their commitment to Terrier student-athletes in record-setting fashion this year," Director of Athletic Development Scott Graham said. "The future is bright, and together we believe we can accomplish even more."
As part of the Campaign for Boston University, Athletics seeks to raise $50 million, with priorities placed on student-athlete scholarships, endowed coaching and administrative positions, various capital projects and the increase of intercollegiate team programmatic operational budgets.

The year was punctuated by several transformative gifts that assisted in the completion of various initiatives, including the following highlights:
- Giving Day – The third annual BU Giving Day, held on April 6, saw 4,986 gifts made to Athletics totaling $513,400, the single largest showing of philanthropy in department history.
- Endowed Scholarships – A number of endowed scholarships were funded, raising the total amount awarded to intercollegiate student-athletes and club sport participants to 35. Through the creation of scholarships, programs are able to attract talented student-athletes who may otherwise be unable to attend BU.
- Capital Projects – The Campaign for Boston University has resulted in a number of completed capital projects, including a renovation of the Women's Golf Locker Room and a new videoboard at Nickerson Field that will be ready for the 2016-17 soccer and lacrosse seasons.
- Sport-Specific Initiatives – The Coach's Cabinet (Men's Ice Hockey), Hoops Club (Men's Basketball), and Terrier Twenty (Men's Lacrosse) were sport-specific initiatives that were either enhanced, augmenting the operating budgets for their respective programs.
- Staff Giving – In 2015-16 BU Athletics achieved 100 percent participation for its staff giving campaign for the first time in department history.
