LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Boston University men's cross country team raced at the 2017 NCAA Pre-National Invitational on Saturday at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park.
BU finished 18th in an elite field of 41 teams, totaling 547 points. The Terriers bested several Power 5 schools, with BU outrunning teams from Pittsburgh, Baylor, Missouri, Arizona, Texas Tech, Kansas and Arizona State.
"We were fairly healthy today, which led to a much better performance than at Paul Short," head coach Paul Spangler said. "To finish 18th at Pre-Nats with that caliber field is good."
The Terriers boasted two harriers in the top 50, led by sophomore Paul Luevano. He completed the 8K course in 23:31.8 to finish 22nd and set a new personal best at 8K. That's the second time this season that Luevano has improved upon his PR, as he had set a new standard with his time of 24:24.9 at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown.
Junior Alexander Seal placed 47th with a time of 23:59.1 to continue his career season. He has now eclipsed his personal best 8K time in all three opportunities this season, having ran PRs at both the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown (24:29.2) and the Paul Short Run (24:27.8).
"Great job up front today by Paul and Alex," Spangler said. "They mixed it up with some of the best in the country."
Like Seal, junior Johnny Kemps has turned in PRs through his first three 8Ks of the season. He finished 130th with a time of 24:44.9, well clear of his previous personal-best mark of 25:06.5 at the Paul Short Run.
"We were without Brett Davidson today, and with him in the mix we're better," Spangler said. "However, our 3-4-5 runners did a good job today."
Senior Cullin Burdett finished in 178th (25:06.0), followed by sophomore Greg Pelose in 188th (25:12.0) to round out the Terrier scorers. Senior Liam O'Connell also raced (27:35.1).
The Terriers will next compete in the 2017 Patriot League Championship, which will take place at Lehigh on Oct. 28.
"I'm pleased, but not satisfied," Spangler said. "We're capable of more, and we've got two weeks to get ready for the conference championship."
