LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Paul Luevano concluded the 2017 cross country season at the NCAA Championship on Saturday morning at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park on the campus of the University of Louisville.
Luevano finished in 222nd place with a time of 32:01.74, his best 10K performance of the season. It was the first NCAA Championship appearance for Luevano, who earned an at-large spot in the race after a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional on Nov. 10.
"Apparently he hurt his back shortly after the start," head coach Paul Spangler said. "You hate to see that happen, especially at this meet, but he toughed it out and decided to finish the race, and I certainly commend him for that."
A native of Los Angeles, Luevano had an outstanding cross country season, highlighted by his victory at the Patriot League Championship. He posted four top-10 and three top-five finishes this year and earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for the second straight season.
"He's had a really good year, a breakthrough year," Spangler said. "I'm proud of what he's done and today was a great experience for him. No doubt the goal is to get back here and have more success. The goal is to get the team here, too."
"Nationals is a whole different animal than regionals and the conference meet," Spangler said. "Everybody's good. As young as Paul is, this was an invaluable experience. Having run against the best and knowing what its like, what to expect, will give him a lot of confidence going into his next NCAA meet. This experience will also motivate him to get back and show what he's capable of doing at the next one."
With the cross country season officially over, Luevano will turn his attention to the indoor track & field season, which begins on Dec. 2 with the BU Season Opener at the Track and Tennis Center.
