HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first race of the day, the varsity eight boats raced for the Conlan Cup (Syracuse) and Lusins Trophy (Columbia). The No. 6 Terriers got out to a quick lead, pulling ahead of second-place Syracuse by four seats in the early going, but Syracuse would not let BU pull away. The Orange caught the Terriers then built a slight lead around the 1000 meter mark in what was a two-boat race as Columbia trailed by open water. The BU 1V, coxed by Mackenzie Hart and stroked by Max Ponsen, trailed Syracuse by four seats with 500 meters to go and could not close on the Orange towards the finish. Syracuse crossed the line with a time of 6:57.8, ahead of BU (6:59.92) and well in front of third-place Columbia (7:03.70).
- With the loss to Syracuse, BU lost the Conlan Cup for the first time since 2012. With its victory over Columbia, BU won the Lusins Trophy for the ninth-straight year.
- In the second varsity eight race, BU held an early three-seat lead and extended it throughout the race, leaving little drama about the outcome as Columbia and Syracuse battled for second. The 2V, coxed by Justin Goucher and stroked by Uros Marinkovic, had an open water lead halfway through the race and extended it over the final 500 meters and coasted to victory. The BU 2V finished with a fast time of 5:55.97, well ahead of second-place Columbia (6:03.87) and third-place Syracuse (6:04.43).
- The BU third varsity boat picked up where the second varsity left off, also getting out to a fast start and never looking back. The 3V, coxed by Jeanne Garner and stroked by Peter Roberts, had an open water lead at the 1000 meter mark over second-place Syracuse and crossed the line with a time of 6:02.06. Syracuse finished second (6:14.26) and Columbia was third (6:26.0).
- In the final race of the morning, the Terriers sent out two varsity 4+ boats to compete against Syracuse and both finished ahead of the Orange. The BU 4 "A" finished first with a time of 6:52.93. The BU 4 "B" finished second (7:02.22) ahead of the Syracuse 4 "A" (7:12.28).
- The Terriers will return home to face old rival Wisconsin for the Jablonic Cup on April 29 in their final race of the season before Eastern Sprints on May 14. The home race vs. Wisconsin will mark the final competition at DeWolfe Boathouse for the Class of 2017, who will be honored after the race.
