Terriers Set to Host Colgate, Honor Seniors in PL Weekend Series

BOSTON – Riding a nine-game conference-win streak, the Boston University softball team will host Colgate over the weekend with both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's matchup slated to begin at 12 p.m.

Prior to Sunday's contest, the Terriers will honor seniors Makinna Akers, Moriah Connolly, Rachel Levine and Gabi Martinez. As part of the festivities, fans will also be treated to a pizza party.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • Currently second in the Patriot League standings, BU is 6-4 at home this season with three-game sweeps over both Army West Point and Holy Cross ... The Terriers followed up last weekend with a three-game shutout sweep at Lafayette.
  • In the nine PL wins, the Terriers have won by a combined score of 58-5 with the help of four homers and a .456 slugging percentage, more than double opponents' .208 slugging percentage.
  • Senior Gabi Martinez has played a key role in the wins with a .552 batting average, while classmate Rachel Levine has hit .400  ... Martinez currently ranks tied-for-ninth all-time at BU with 30 doubles and is third on the team at .331.
  • Senior Moriah Connolly is tied for first on the team at .333 with junior Jilee Schanda ... Connolly currently ranks second all-time at BU in stolen bases (111), fourth in runs scored (144) and fifth in hits (212).
  • Sophomore Alex Heinen is batting .286 with a team-high 11 doubles, seven homers and 33 RBIs.
  • In the circle, senior Makinna Akers (8-9, 2.60 ERA) and freshman Kali Magane (10-10, 3.00 ERA) have an identical 56 strikeouts apiece ... They have combined for six shutouts over the nine PL wins.
SCOUTING COLGATE
  • Coming off a doubleheader split at home against Syracuse, the Raiders are 3-10-1 on the road this season with wins at Cornell, Binghamton and Stetson.
  • Colgate is hitting .271 and holding opponents to .340 ... Opponents have a 53-39 advantage in stolen bases, while the Raiders own a slight 22-21 advantage in homers.
  • Holly Geranen owns a team-high .391 batting average with 11 doubles, six homers and 32 RBIs ... Both Lauren La Terra (.350 avg) and Katie Bushee (.317 avg) are both above .300 with a combined 31 RBIs.
  • Bushee and Virginia Irby (.264 avg.) are a combined 27-of-37 in stolen base attempts ... Jordan Miller (.248 avg.) has four homers and 19 RBIs.
  • All four Colgate pitchers have at least six starts apiece ... Gillian Murray (2-5, 5.42 ERA) has gone the distance five times, while Kyle Griswold (3-9, 5.82 ERA) owns three complete games ... The two have  combined for 72 strikeouts in 142 innings. 
SERIES HISTORY
  • The Terriers are 8-1 all-time with all nine contests taking place in the Patriot League over the last three years .
  • Last season on the road, they bounced back from a 1-0 game-one loss with a 9-2 win and 5-0 victory ... None of BU's current pitchers appeared in the series ... Martinez and Ponce both had three RBIs apiece.
  • In 2014, BU won three at Colgate by a combined score of 20-5 and then claimed three at home in 2015 by a combined score of 19-9, which included a 4-3 decision.
  • After Colgate scored three runs in that 4-3 contest, Akers appeared in relief and pitched seven scoreless innings while allowing just two hits ... The Terriers rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.
  • Akers pitched all seven innings in game two at home and was helped by Schanda's grand slam.
