Openweight V8 Takes Fifth at Eastern Sprints

RESULTS
WORECESTER – The Boston University women's openweight rowing team competed against some of the top teams on the East Coast at the 44th Eastern Sprints on Sunday. The day was highlighted by the varsity eighth boat advancing to the grand finals and finishing fifth.
The V8 finished second in its morning heat race, behind only No. 18 Harvard and ahead of boats from Boston College, Holy Cross and Buffalo, to move on to the grand final and finished fifth overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The competition opened with heat racing in the morning, with boats needing to finish in the top two in their respective races to advance to the grand final. In the morning heat race, the BU V8 raced against Harvard, BC, Holy Cross and Buffalo. The V8 fought off third-place Boston College down the stretch to finish second and advance the regatta's championship race. Coxed by Marlaina Miller and stroked by Annalise Routenberg, the 1V finished with a time of 6:31.60, behind heat winner Harvard (6:27.41) but ahead of third-place BC (6:33.14), Holy Cross (6:51.58) and Buffalo (6:54.49).
- In the varsity eight grand final, BU took on some of the best boats on the East Coast, facing off against, Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, Northeastern and MIT. Harvard jumped out to an early lead followed by Northeastern as Columbia and Dartmouth battled it out for third. Harvard coasted to victory, defending their varsity eight title with a time of 6:48.51. Northeastern won silver with a time of 6:52.93, while Columbia took home the bronze (6:57.37). Dartmouth finished fourth (6:59.1) while BU was fifth with a time of 7:07.75, ahead of MIT (7:13.5).
- The second varsity eight boat, coxed by Erin Gannon and stroked by Kelsey Farmer, finished third in its morning heat race with a time of (6:49.06), behind heat-winner Northeastern (6:43.80) and second-place BC (6:46.04) and moved on to the afternoon petite final.
- In the petite final, the BU 2V finished second with a time of 7:17.49, behind race-winner Bucknell (7:14.18) but ahead of UConn (7:20.57), Rutgers (7:23.34), MIT (7:27.15), Holy Cross (7:28.89), and Buffalo (7:48.00).
- The varsity 4A boat, coxed by Julia White and stroked by Sonja Gruzen, finished third in its morning heat race behind Columbia and BC and moved on to the petite final.
- In the petite final, the BU 4A finished third with a time of 8:23.22 behind race-winner Connecticut (8:09.76) and Rutgers (8:11.70) but ahead of Patriot League foe Bucknell (8:30.21), Buffalo (8:52.43), MIT (9:01.17) and Holy Cross (9:07.00).
- The BU 4B boat also competed, racing in the 4B grand final (with no heat race to advance) and finished sixth.
- With its gold medal victories in the V8 grand final and the 2V8 grand final, the Crimson won the overall 2017 Eastern Sprints team title.

NOTES
- Racing was halted at 12:50 p.m. due to a storm moving through the area with the threat of lightning. The competition did not resume until 3:10 p.m.
UP NEXT
- The BU openweights will next race at the Patriot League Championships on May 12 in Cherry Hill, N.J. The Terriers will compete for a conference championship and an automatic bid to the NCAAs which begin on May 26 in West Windsor, N.J.
