BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Unable to apply enough pressure on reigning Patriot League Pitcher of the Year Christine Campbell, the No. 2-seed Boston University softball team fell in a pair of one-run decisions to top-seed Lehigh on Sunday afternoon during the conference's championship round at Leadership Park.
The Mountain Hawks (36-18) had a third-inning two-out RBI single for a 1-0 victory in the first game and then a key two-out, two-RBI double in the second inning of game two to help eliminate the Terriers (25-27), 4-3.
Few could have predicted a pitchers' duel between the last two PL champions after the Mountain Hawks swept the regular-season three-game weekend series by a combined score of 30-10 and the Terriers won the semifinal matchup, 14-7. However, Campbell only allowed two earned runs on the day to claim Tournament MVP honors, while senior All-PL First Team honoree Makinna Akers limited Lehigh to just one earned run in a combined 10.2 innings of work.
Senior Gabi Martinez led BU with seven hits over the past four days, including a game-two, two-out RBI single against Lehigh in the top of the seventh to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. She was joined on the PL All-Tournament Team by Akers and senior Moriah Connolly, who scored six runs off six hits and swiped three bags to set a Patriot League regular-season record for stolen bases at 41.
