Terriers Finish Sixth at IRAs

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Highlighted by a sixth-place team finish, the Boston University men's rowing team competed at the IRA National Championship Regatta on Sunday.
The Terriers were led by a sixth-place finish in the second varsity eight grand finals and a fourth-place finish in the varsity four grand finals. As a team, BU tallied 133 Ten Eyck points to place sixth out of a field of 24. The Washington Huskies won the Jim Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy as the overall points champion, their 10th title in the last 11 years, while Yale won the varsity eight race over Washington.

HOW IT HAPPENED
VARSITY EIGHT
• The No. 6 varsity eight competed in a seven-boat petite final against No. 9 Northeastern, No. 11 Syracuse, No. 7 Dartmouth, No. 13 Wisconsin, No. 10 Cornell and No. 14 Penn. Dartmouth and Northeastern got out to the early lead with BU, Syracuse and Wisconsin battling for third. Dartmouth and NU traded the lead before Northeastern pulled ahead for good at the 1000 meter mark. BU pulled away from Wisconsin and battled Syracuse for third over the final 500 meters, but the Orange held on over the final 100 meters. NU won the race with a time of 5:36.57, with Syracuse (5:38.59) in second and Dartmouth in third (5:39.18). BU finished fourth with a time of 5:39.85 followed by Wisco (5:41.50), Cornell (5:41.91) and Penn (5:42.56).
SECOND VARSITY EIGHT
• In the second varsity eight grand final on Sunday, the No. 5 Terriers took on No. 1 Washington, No. 2 California, No. 3 Princeton, No 4 Yale and No. 6 Harvard. Washington and Princeton were the early leaders, followed by Cal in third with Harvard, Yale and BU within two seats over the first 500 meters. Washington separated from the pack by a length over the second half of the race but the rest of the field remained close over the final 500 meters with multiple place changes. Washington won gold by open water with a time of 5:38.65 with Cal taking silver (5:40.72) and Princeton bronze (5:40.77). Yale was just off the medal stand, finishing fourth with a time of 5:40.82, followed by Harvard in fifth (5:41.18) and BU in sixth (5:52.00).
THIRD VARSITY EIGHT
• The No. 10 ranked third varsity eight competed in the petite final against No. 8 Northeastern, No.7 Wisconsin, No. 13 Dartmouth, and No. 11Cornell and No. 12 Syracuse. The BU 3V opened up a lead early followed in second by Northeastern and Wisconsin. The Terriers stretched the lead to a length at the 1000 meter mark and were never seriously challenged the rest of the way. The Terriers cruised to victory by open water with a time of 5:52.88, followed by Northeastern (5:54.18), Wisconsin (5:58.58), Dartmouth (6:00.12), Cornell (6:00.73) and Syracuse (6:01.44).
VARSITY FOUR
• In the first race of the day for the Terriers on Sunday, the varsity four raced in the grand final against Washington, California, Princeton, Marietta and Brown. In the grand finals, Washington pulled ahead early, followed by Cal with BU and Princeton battling for third. Washington stretched its lead throughout the race with Cal solidly in second. Princeton held a five-seat lead over BU with 500 meters to go and held on for third. Washington won gold (6:23.81), with California taking silver (6:28.35) and Princeton bronze (6:34.31). BU finished fourth (6:39.05).
2017 IRA CHAMPION WASHINGTON HUSKIES
• The Washington Huskies regained the Jim Ten Eyck Memorial Trophy as the overall points champion, their 10th title in the last 11 years, thanks to gold medals in the three racing categories. Yale won the men's heavyweight eight race over Washington however by just .69 seconds in a thrilling final race. Washington finished with 211 points (points were awarded for the three eights races only), while Yale came in as runner-up with 195. The Huskies' streak of nine straight Ten Eycks had been broken last year when Cal won the title.
• BU finished sixth in team points, matching the 2014 Terriers. BU's tally of 133 points was seven points better than the 126 points the team earned in 2016.
