LEWISBURG, Pa. - Led by freshman
Jessica Kellar's fifth-place performance, the Boston University women's cross country team finished fourth at the 2018 Patriot League Championship on Saturday at Bucknell.
BU totaled 113 points, just two points shy of third-place Navy. Bucknell won with 33 points, followed by Lehigh in second with 73 points. The Terriers improved upon last year's seventh-place finish and score of 152 points. They also claimed another point for BU in the Turnpike Trophy series against Holy Cross, as the Crusaders finished seventh with 209 points.
"I'm pleased with our performance,"Â head coach
Paul Spangler said. "I felt like we could be top five today, and to finish fourth was within our goals. I'm proud of the job everyone did in a total team effort."
Kellar became the first Terrier in program history to be named Patriot League Rookie of the Meet after she crossed the finish line of the 6K race in 21:59.6. A two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week selection in 2018, Kellar was the fastest freshman at Saturday's championship meet by over 20 seconds.
"I'm proud of Jessica for coming into her first Patriot League meet and mixing it up with the best runners in the conference,"Â Spangler said. "She fell towards the end of the race, but she did a great job to not quit and keep fighting to the finish."
Sophomore
Corinne Batsu finished 15th with a time of 22:26.0, followed by classmate
Laura Parkinson in 32nd (23:04.0). Junior
Coco Ocker was 34th (23:06.2) and senior
Elin Wolker placed 36th (23:07.2) to round out the Terrier scorers.
"Corinne has improved so much since she's gotten here," Spangler said. "I'm proud of all the work she's put in to get to this point."
Senior
Dominique Betterbed finished 39th with a time of 23:11.7, with classmate
Alicia Huerta not far behind in 45th (23:19.3). Freshmen
Stephanie Casaletto (23:32.5),
Meghan Convery (23:41.0) and
Angela Castronuovo (24:16.6) all made their conference championship debuts on Saturday, while sophomore
Stephanie Forbes (24:23.7) and senior
Jamie Grossman (24:31.2) also raced.
Next up for the Terriers will be the NCAA Northeast Regional, which will take place in Buffalo, New York, on Friday, Nov. 9.
