Terriers Defeat UConn, 4-1

STORRS, Conn. - Sophomore Jesse Compher and redshirt junior Sammy Davis both scored two goals to lift the Boston University women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory over UConn on Friday night at Freitas Ice Forum.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams played to a scoreless first period, with UConn (5-5-1, 2-4-1 WHEA) holding an 8-7 edge in shots on goal.
  • Compher gave BU (2-3-3, 2-3-3 WHEA) a 1-0 lead at 3:37 of the stanza. After sophomore Corinne Schroeder (30 saves) turned aside a UConn chance, redshirt junior Abbey Stanley cleared the puck ahead to Compher. She quickly passed the puck to junior Abby Cook, who was exiting the penalty box. Morgan Fisher turned aside Cook's breakaway bid, but Compher kept with the play and knocked home the rebound.
  • After UConn tied the game with 5:49 remaining in the period, Davis answered just 47 seconds later to regain the lead when she stole the puck in the Huskies' zone and dangled past a diving Fisher before sliding the puck into the net.
  • Davis and Compher combined for a shorthanded insurance goal at 6:44 of the third period to make it 3-1. Compher won a defensive-zone draw back to junior Breanna Scarpaci, who then sent the puck along the wall to Davis. The tri-captain chipped the puck past a Husky and created a 2-on-1 with Compher. Davis skated up the left wing and deftly sent a saucer pass over a UConn defender and right onto Compher's stick at the right post for the sophomore's fourth goal of the season.
  • The Terriers came up with a huge penalty kill late in the third period, with Schroeder making three saves, one of which came after Compher shattered her stick while blocking a shot.
  • UConn pulled its goalie with 1:52 remaining in regulation, but the Terriers were able to defend the extra-attacker situation and ice the game when Davis skated to center ice and fired the puck into the vacant cage. Compher and Stanley both assisted on Davis' sixth goal of the season.
GAME NOTES
  • This was Compher's second career two-goal game. She previously scored two goals against Brown on Nov. 28, 2017.
  • Compher matched her career high of three points that she set in the Terriers' 3-2 win over New Hampshire on Oct. 13, when she also tallied a shorthanded goal.
  • Schroeder has now held opponents to two goals or fewer in five straight starts.
  • Davis' last three-point game came on Oct. 7, 2016, against UNH.
  • She also tallied two goals in the 3-2 win over UNH earlier this year.
  • Stanley most recently recorded two assists on Feb. 24 at Maine.
  • BU was a perfect 4-of-4 on the penalty kill.
NEXT UP: VERMONT
  • The Terriers will return home for a two-game series against Vermont on Nov. 16 and 17 at Walter Brown Arena.
  • Friday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
