Mahoney, Whyte Earn All-Conference Accolades
February 26, 2018 | Men's Basketball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Boston University men's basketball sophomore Max Mahoney (third) and freshman Walter Whyte (rookie) received All-Patriot League Team honors, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Both men played key roles in helping the Terriers extend the program's streak of finishing .500 or better in conference action to 18 seasons (ninth longest in the nation) after BU lost three starters from last year and had senior leading scorer Cedric Hankerson miss a third of the PL games due to injury.
With the graduation of 2017 All-PL Second Team forward Justin Alston ('17), Mahoney stepped in and more than doubled his scoring average from 5.8 ppg his freshman year to 12.8 ppg as a sophomore while also averaging 5.0 rpg to claim his first All-Conference award. More impressively, the Basking Ridge, New Jersey, native shot 60.7 percent from the field, which currently would set a new school record. He reached 20+ points five times during the regular season, including a career-high 29 points at UMass Lowell and 27 points at home against Loyola Maryland. He also posted a personal-best 11 rebounds for the double-double against the River Hawks and later dished out a career-high five assists against Army West Point. On the defensive end, he recorded three blocks in a game three times.
Whyte's award keeps the streak alive for head coach Joe Jones, as the Terriers have now claimed seven All-Rookie honors in the last six years. BU is the only program in the 10-league team to have an All-Rookie member each of the last five years that the Terriers have been a member of the conference. Whyte finished fourth on the team in scoring at 9.0 ppg and third in rebounding (4.9 rpg). Once conference play hit though, the New Haven, Connecticut, native increased those numbers to 10.5 ppg and 5.9 rpg, respectively. Besides hitting the game-winning basket this past Saturday at Army West Point, he claimed double-doubles against both Lehigh and Bucknell.
As the No. 5 seed with a 10-8 conference record, the Terriers will next open the Patriot League tournament at No. 4 Lehigh (11-7 PL) on Thursday (March 1) with a 7 p.m. start time.
