No. 1 Lightweight V8 Wins Gold at Dad Vail Regatta

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. –
Highlighted by a first-place finish by the No.1 ranked lightweight varsity eight boat, the Boston University's women's lightweight rowing team competed at the Dad Vail Regatta which concluded Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa.
 
Competing against heavyweight competition, the BU lightweights advanced three boats to the grand finals, won gold in the V8 competition and took home silver in doubles competition.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In Friday's time trial contest, the No. 1 ranked lightweight varsity eight boat competed against a large field of 18 openweight crews. The 1V, coxed by Katie Barnett and stroked by Riona McCormick, finished first with a time of 6:07.38 to move on to the semi-finals. In the semis, the 1V8 also finished first with a time of 6:36.27, ahead of second-place MIT (6:38.81). In the grand finals, the 1V won gold with a time of 6:24,62, finishing in front of  crews from UMass (6:30.09), Fordham (6:31.85), Drexel (6:34.80), MIT (6:35.87) and Grand Valley "47" (6:40.71).
  • On Friday, the BU varsity four, coxed by Antonella Kugler and stroked by Tamara Gelfman, finished fourth in its time trial with a time of 7:03.90 in a large field of 29 to advance to the semi-finals. In the semis, the V4 finished second with a time of 7:30.01 behind only Drexel and moved on to the grand finals. In the grand finals, the V4 finished fourth with a time of 7:21.06, ahead of UMass Lowell (7:21.97) and Lafayette (7:32.60).
  • In doubles trial racing on Friday, the BU "A", made up of Gabrielle Hebden-Pearl and Peyton Lancaster, finished third in a field of 21 with a time of 7:28.70 to advance to the semi-final. In semi, BU finished first with a time of 8:06.83 to advance to the grand finals. In the grand final, the 2x "A" finished fourth with a time of 7:54.95.
  • In the same 2x time trial on Friday the 2x "B", made up of Caitriona Parker and Heather Walter, finished 15th with a time of 8:03.50 and moved on to the third semi-final. In the third semi-final the 2x "B" finished fourth (8:44.33) and moved on to the second final. In the second final, the 2x "B" finished fifth with a time of 8:21.58.
 
 NEXT UP
The women's lightweight rowing team will next compete at the IRA National Championship Regatta on June 1-3, in Mercer County, N.J.
