The Boston University men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown at Franklin Park on Friday afternoon. The women's 5K race is schedule for 3 p.m., followed by the men's 8K event at 3:30 p.m.
Both the men and women will be going against some of the top teams in the nation. Four nationally ranked women's teams (Providence, Syracuse, Minnesota, Dartmouth) and six of the top 10 schools in the Northeast Region will run on Friday. On the men's side, five nationally ranked men's squads (Syracuse, Campbell, Virginia, Washington, Ole Miss) will be part of a competitive field that includes seven of the top 10 teams in the Northeast Region. The Terrier men enter the weekend at No. 9 in the Northeast after being ranked fifth in the preseason poll.
This will be the second race of the season for the Terriers, who opened their 2018 season on Sept. 14 against Florida State at Franklin Park. For the women, sophomore Laura Parkinson led the way with a 5K time of 19:16.54. Three other women were in the top 10 against the Seminoles, including freshman Jesica Kellar (19:34.36). At last year's Battle in Beantown, junior Abigail Gugel was the Terriers' top finisher with a time of 18:37.
BU finished fifth as a team in last year's men's race. Junior Paul Luevano, who finished second against the Seminoles last week with an 8K time of 25:14.93, was seventh a year ago with a time of 24:25. Senior Alexander Seal also ran well in last year's race, finishing 10th (24:30). Junior Brett Davidson and senior Johnny Kemps also scored for the Terriers in 2017, with Davidson finishing fifth last weekend against FSU.
Following Friday's meet, the Terriers will travel to Lehigh for the Paul Short Run on Saturday, Sept. 29.
