BOSTON – Led by four Terriers scoring in double-digits, the Boston University women's basketball team earned a 63-51 victory in its Patriot League opener against Army West Point Thursday night at Case Gym.
Naiyah Thompson posted her second career double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
Payton Hauck led all scorers with 14 points, while
Nia Irving matched Thompson with a 13-point effort and
Katie Nelson chipped in 12 points.
How It Happened
- The two squads exchanged baskets through the opening minutes before a drive through the lane by Hauck gave BU an 8-7 edge midway through the first.
- From there, Irving took over, guiding a 14-4 run as part of a nine-point effort in the first quarter to give the Terriers a 20-14 lead.
- Carrying the energy into the second frame, Nelson connected on back-to-back triples to give the Terriers an 11-point advantage.
- Army battled back to cut the deficit to two points, though the Terriers held the scoreboard at 34-30 heading into the break.
- BU swung the momentum back in its favor to start the second half, as Hauck and Irving fueled an 8-0 run to reclaim the double-digits lead.
- Nelson capped a dominant third quarter with an and-1, as BU held Army to shoot just 20.0 percent from the floor to stake a 52-39 grip heading into the fourth.
- The Black Knights opened the fourth quarter with a 6-0 run to trim BU's advantage to single digits.
- Thompson put the finishing touches on the game, scoring six of BU's last 11 points to guide the team to its fifth straight win at home.
