Terriers Fight for 47-44 Comeback Win at Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Trailing by 13 points to start the third quarter, the Boston University women's basketball team locked down on defense, holding Lafayette to just five field goals in the second half as it outlasted the Leopards 47-44 Wednesday night at the Kirby Sports Center.
Nia Irving posted her third double-double in Patriot League play and fifth of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Riley Childs also reached double figures with 10 points, while Payton Hauck followed with seven points to go with six rebounds.

- Irving led an attack in the paint to open the game, as three straight layups led to an early 6-4 edge.
- Lafayette started to heat up from beyond-the-arc, knocking down three triples en route to holding the upper hand, 15-12, at the end of the first.
- Lauren Spearman caught the hot hand as she started the second quarter off with five straight points to make it a one-point game.
- The Leopards scored on their next three possessions to spark a 13-2 run.
- Nelson got BU back on track by knocking down a corner 3-pointer, though the Terriers trailed 33-22 at the intermission.
- Hauck started the second frame off with back-to-back drives from the wing, and Nelson connected from the elbow to cut the deficit to single digits, 37-28.
- Childs sliced her way through traffic to make it a one-possession game before the Leopards snapped the 10-0 run, as Lafayette clung to a 39-24 lead at the end of the third.
- Remaining aggressive, Childs extended her scoring run with four points to start the fourth, including converting on an and-1, while Irving knotted the score at 39-all from the charity stripe with seven minutes left.
- Both squads exchanged baskets until Hauck and Irving put in back-to-back layups to mark BU's first four-point advantage with 3:36 to play.
- The Leopards converts on an and-1 to make it a one-point game with 1:54 on the clock, though Hauck pushed the lead back to three by sending in a putback layup on the Terriers ensuing possession.
- Lafayette launched a pair of 3-point attempts in the final minute, but both rimmed out as the Terriers held on for their second straight road win.

- With the win, BU's 6-3 record marks its best start in Patriot League play since joining the conference in 2013.
- BU grabbed the first 12 offensive rebounds of the game.
- The Terriers limited the league's third-leading scorer, Natalie Kucowski, to just four points, her lowest scoring total of the season.
- BU has outscored its opponents 33-10 in the third quarter over the last two games.
- BU will start the second half of the conference schedule at home against Bucknell on Saturday, Feb. 2.
- Following Saturday's contest, BU will have a Wednesday off from competition before it heads back to Lehigh Valley for a matchup against Lehigh on Saturday, Feb. 9.
