BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Paced by top-40 finishes from senior Paul Luevano and redshirt junior Brett Davidson, the Boston University men's cross country team continued its 2019 campaign on Saturday at the Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh.
BU took 18th in the 44-team field with 567 points, 22 points clear of nationally-ranked Iona and less than 10 points behind the 16th-place squad.
"I thought we did a really good job today, especially Paul and Brett," head coach Paul Spangler said. "I'm pleased with the result, but we still have work to do. We need to close the gap between our No. 5 and our No. 1, but it was definitely a much better performance than Beantown."
Luevano finished the 8K race in 23:57.3, good for 30th overall. Davidson was not far behind him in 40th thanks to a time of 24:08.1. Senior Greg Pelose was 150th in a field of close to 400 runners with a time of 24:53.4, followed by junior Jonathan Fierro (25:02.8).
"I thought Jon did a good job, and I'm pleased that Greg finished under 25:00 for the first time," Spangler said. "Jon had a great summer. He consistently put in a lot of work and that's proved to be key to his performances this season. He's really stepped up."
Sophomores Joe Grandizio (25:12.2) and Marcel Aubry (25:17.7) rounded out the Terrier scorers. Freshmen Foster Malleck and Kevin Murphy crossed the finish line in 25:18.6 and 25:29.8, respectively, while Mike Hagen turned in a time of 26:11.3. Spangler also acknowledged the effort of junior Scotti Hamilton in the open 8K race, as Hamilton led BU with a time of 25:20.2.
This race was an important response after a disappointing effort at the Battle in Beantown two weeks prior.
"If there was anything that could go wrong at Beantown, it did go wrong," Spangler said. "For the team to come out here and run well shows how they can persevere, have a bad race and come out the next race more determined. That's what they did today."
The Terriers will return to competition on Oct. 19 at the Princeton Invitational, which will be their final race before the Patriot League Championship.
"We're definitely feeling pretty good about where we're at right now," Spangler said. "We just have to keep working hard and stay healthy."
