Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

No. 9 Terriers Edged by No. 4 Northeastern, 2-1

BOSTON - Freshman Julia Nearis notched her fourth goal of the season, but No. 4 Northeastern tallied two third-period goals to sneak past the ninth-ranked Boston University women's ice hockey team, 2-1, on Friday night at Walter Brown Arena.

Nearis extended her point streak to three games thanks to her power-play goal in the second stanza. Senior Abby Cook and redshirt senior Sammy Davis both assisted on Nearis' marker. Cook now has a six-game point streak while Davis joined Nearis by moving her point streak to three tilts.

BU (5-2-1, 2-2-1 HEAW) had its four-game win streak snapped despite 35 saves from junior Corinne Schroeder. Northeastern (6-1-0, 3-1-0 HEAW) got 22 saves from Aerin Frankel, including 10 in the final frame, to stave off a late Terrier rally.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Schroeder made several spectacular saves during the contest, including a stop on Veronika Pettey from point-blank range late in the first period to keep the game scoreless.
  • Nearis opened the scoring for BU at 5:56 of the middle period. Davis and Cook played catch at the top of the zone before Cook uncorked a shot on goal. Stationed between the faceoff circles, Nearis redirected the blast past Frankel.
  • Northeastern nearly equalized halfway through the stanza on a 2-on-1 rush, but Schroeder denied Skylar Fontaine from close range to keep BU in the lead.
  • The Huskies broke through with a power-play strike just 52 seconds into the third period, then followed with the winner at the 10:20 mark.
  • BU pressured late and pulled Schroeder for an extra attacker in the final minute, but the Terriers were unable to salvage a point.
GAME NOTES
  • Cook has collected seven points (3g, 4a) during her six-game point streak.
  • Schroeder has allowed just two even-strength goals over her last 284:05 of work dating back to the Oct. 11 game against Merrimack.
  • Nearis has scored in both BU home games this season.
  • Friday was the Terriers' annual Do It For Daron Mental Health Awareness game.
UP NEXT
  • BU and Northeastern will conclude this home-and-home series at Matthews Arena on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
  • The game will be televised live on NESN.
