Terriers Take Third at Patriot League Championship
November 2, 2019 | Men's Cross Country
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Led by a seventh-place performance by redshirt junior Brett Davidson, the Boston University men's cross country team finished third at the 2019 Patriot League Championship on Saturday morning at Colgate's Harry H. Lang Cross Country Course.
BU recorded 96 points to best fourth-place Lehigh by one point. Army West Point (37 points) and Navy (40) were the top two squads. The Terriers were 101 points clear of Holy Cross to secure a Turnpike Trophy point.
"Obviously we want to compete for a title, but third place is a positive and we have to build from that," Spangler said ."We knew that Lehigh and Bucknell would be right there on our heels and it ended up that way. Halfway through, the guys dug down and held it together and moved up to squeak out third place."
Davidson earned First Team All-Patriot League accolades for the first time; he was a second-team selection a year ago. Davidson crossed the finish line with an 8K time of 25:37.6.
Senior Paul Luevano, the 2016 conference champion, earned Second Team All-Patriot League recognition with an 11th-place finish thanks to a time of 25:43.9. Luevano will finish his collegiate career as a four-time All-Patriot League honoree.
Brett is very consistent," Spangler said. "I thought he did a good job. As for Paul, not many people can say they've been All-Patriot League all four years in cross country. I'm proud of the work he's done."
Junior Greg Pelose (26:25.1) and freshman Foster Malleck (26:26.7) were 26th and 27th, respectively. Freshman Kevin Murphy (26:28.8) rounded out the scoring with a 29th-place effort in his first conference championship.
"Kevin Murphy has been a guy who's really stepped up this year," Spangler said. "I thought he did a good job today and I think he has a bright future."
Sophomore Marcel Aubry was 43rd with a time of 26:59.9, followed by freshman Rylan Pettit (27:05.7) in 50th. Sophomore Joe Grandizio (27:13.7), freshman Mike Hagan (27:42.1), freshman Danny Skahill (27:46.4) and sophomore Diego de la Torre (28:24.2) also competed.
BU will now turn its attention to the NCAA Northeast Regional, which will take place in Buffalo on Friday, Nov. 15.
