Women's Basketball Can't Get Past Loyola, 59-55

BOSTON – With Patriot League Tournament implications on the line, the Boston University women's basketball team could not get past Loyola, falling 59-55 Wednesday night at The Roof.

Wednesday's result dropped BU to the No. 4 seed, while Lehigh topped Holy Cross to bump up to the No. 3 seed. The Terriers will host the Crusaders, the No. 5 seed, on Monday, March 11 in a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal matchup at 7 p.m.

Nia Irving led the Terriers with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Lauren Spearman followed with 11 points and Katie Nelson also reached double figures with 10. Riley Childs led BU in rebounding for the third straight game, grabbing 11 boards and chipped in six points.

How it Happened

  • Payton Hauck halted the Greyhound run with a jumper in the lane before Thompson followed by driving through traffic to trim the deficit to 12-6.
  • Spearman knocked down a 3-pointer as BU swung a 5-1 run to end the first, though the Greyhounds maintained a six-point lead.
  • Nia Irving willed BU back into the game as she exploded for 11 points in the second quarter on 5-of-5 shooting.
  • Nelson hit a buzzer-beater on the fast break to put the Terriers within two, 37-35, at the break.
  • The Greyhounds used a 7-2 run to start the third quarter, pushing them to a 46-38 command midway through the frame.
  • Tenisha Pressley sparked an 8-0 streak, capped by back-to-back power layups by Naiyah Thompson to knot the score at 46-all, though the Greyhounds clung to a 50-47 advantage heading into the final frame.
  • Spearman connected from beyond-the-arc to tie it up once again at 50-all to start the fourth.
  • Following a 5-0 Loyola run, Nelson drilled a corner 3-pointer to make it a two-point game with just over five minutes to play.
  • Despite grabbing five straight offensive rebounds on a nearly three-minute offensive set, BU could not put one through the basket, while Loyola converted on the following end to reclaim the lead, 57-55, with 57 ticks left.
  • With Loyola holding a three-point lead with 36 seconds remaining, BU missed its final two 3-point attempts to cap an 0-for-9 shooting mark to end the game.
