HOW IT HAPPENED
Varsity Eight
In the first race of the morning, the No. 10 Dartmouth 1V got out to an early two-seat lead over BU at the 500 meter mark. The Big Green extended its lead to three seats at the 1000 meter mark before BU made its move. The Terriers, coxed by Sean Dooling and stroked by Nils Kocher, pulled even with Dartmouth and then quickly surged ahead over the third 500 meters, opening a four seat lead. Despite Dartmouth's best efforts down the stretch, BU was able to extend its lead and win by a length. BU finished with a time of 6:17.50, ahead of Dartmouth's time of 6:20.55.
With the victory, BU won the Bill Cup for the first time since 2016. Prior to 2016, BU had won 11-straight Bill Cup races.
Second Varsity Eight
In the 2V race, Dartmouth got out to a five seat lead at the 500 meter mark but once again the Terriers' boat came back. Coxed by William Mulhall and stoked by Andrew Marsh, the 2V caught Dartmouth at the Mass. Ave Bridge and pulled ahead by a full length over the next 500 meters. Dartmouth made a charge over the final 500 but BU answered and held the lead down the stretch to win by a half a length. The BU 2V finished with a time of 6:17.60, ahead of Dartmouth's time of 6:19.69.
Third Varsity Eight
In the third race of the morning, the BU 3V got out to an early lead and didn't look back. Coxed by Grace Heavey and stroked by James Warren, the 3V led by half a length at the 500m mark and extended it to about a length at the Mass. Ave Bridge. Dartmouth made a charge at the 1000m mark but the BU boat raised its stroke rate in response and held off the move, winning by three quarters of a length. BU finished in 6:32.40, ahead of Dartmouth's time of 6:35.13.
Fourth Varsity Eight
Under rapidly deteriorating conditions on the Charles River, the BU 4V8 looked to complete the sweep against the Dartmouth 4V8 and 5V8 boats in the final race of the day. Coxed by Catherine O'Neal and stroked by Max Sullivan, the 4V fell behind the Dartmouth 4V early and chased the Big Green throughout the race. BU fought hard and nearly caught Dartmouth at the line but fell just short, losing by a bow ball in a very close finish. The Dartmouth 4V won with a time of 6:33.39, just ahead of BU (6:33.87) while the Dartmouth 5V finished third (7:01.46).
UP NEXT
