HOW IT HAPPENED
Varsity Eight
In the last contest of the day, the BU and Syracuse V8s went stroke for stroke in the early going while Columbia settled into third place. The BU V8, stroked by Nils Kocher and coxed by coxed Sean Dooling, built a lead over Syracuse at the 500m mark and stretched it to a full length at the 1000m mark. The Terriers extended the lead to open water over Syracuse at the 1500 meter mark before the Orange made their move. Syracuse was able to close the gap to just a bow with 100m to go but the Terriers answered and held on for the victory in an exciting finish. BU won with a time of 5:49.98 while Syracuse finished in 5:51.12. Columbia finished in third with a time of 5:54.31.
With the victory, BU won its second-straight (and sixth-out-of-seven) Conlan Cup race over Syracuse and won its ninth straight Lusins Trophy race over Columbia.
Second Varsity Eight
Coxed by William Mulhall and stroked by Andrew Marsh, the BU 2V got off to a fast start and never relinquished the lead. BU pulled ahead of second-place Syracuse and third-place Columbia by open water at the 1000 meter mark. Syracuse challenged over the final 500 meters and cut BU's lead to a half length but BU won with a time of 6:02.73 with Syracuse in second (6:04.11) and Columbia third (6:19.75).
Third Varsity Eight
Coxed by Chloe Jacobs and stroked by Kyle Blackburn, the third varsity eight competed in a competitive back and forth race. Syracuse built a length lead over BU but the Terriers worked back to pull even with 500 meters to go. Syracuse answered and surged ahead down the stretch to win the race with a time of 6:03.05. BU was second (6:06.05) and Columbia was again third (6:39.38).
Four Varsity Eight
In a two-boat race, BU's young 4V8 boat fell behind early and trailed Syracuse by a length at the 500m mark. Coxed freshman Catherine O'Neal and stroked by sophomore Jack Schofield, the Terriers fought back to catch the Orange and then rowed through them over the final half of the race, winning handily with a time of 6:12.50 to Syracuse's time of 6:16.15.
