Cross Country Teams to Open 2019 Season Saturday at Colgate
September 5, 2019 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
The Boston University men's and women's cross country teams will begin their 2019 seasons at the Harry Lang Invitational in Hamilton, New York, on Saturday, Sept. 7. This is the Terriers' first of four races prior to the Patriot League Championships, which will take place in Hamilton on Nov. 2.
"This is a great opportunity to race on the same course we will return to for the Patriot League championships later in the season," head coach Paul Spangler said. "I am excited to see not only our retuning athletes compete, but also our freshmen who will put on the BU uniform for the first time."
On the men's side, BU returns 2017 Patriot League champion and three-time First Team All-Patriot League honoree Paul Luevano, as well as 2018 Second Team All-Patriot League honoree Brett Davidson. Both runners were integral to the Terriers' second-place finish during last year's conference championship, with Luevano finishing fourth and Davidson finishing 10th. They were also two of the four BU harriers that placed within the top 100 at the 2018 NCAA Northeast Regional.
Incoming freshman Foster Malleck will look to make an impact after winning a gold medal for Canada in the 1,500m run at the U20 Pan American Championships in July. He is one of 14 newcomers on the men's squad this year.
Returning for Spangler on the women's side is sophomore Jessica Kellar, who is coming off a stellar rookie campaign. The Mississauga, Ontario, native earned the program's first Patriot League Rookie of the Meet accolade after placing fifth in the Patriot League championships and helping the Terriers to a fourth-place finish. Kellar was also a First Team All-Patriot League selection and a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week honoree.
Another key returner for BU is junior Corinne Batsu, who finished 15th at last year's conference meet. She will join junior Laura Parkinson and senior Coco Ocker, both of whom placed within the top 35. These three will round out the Terriers' strong core of returning runners.
Following this race, BU will compete in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown at Franklin Park on Friday, Sept. 20.
