BOSTON - Emily Howard, who most recently served as the assistant athletics director for academic support at Monmouth University, has been named Boston University's director of leadership and career development.
Howard will primarily oversee the Bloom Family Leadership Initiative (BFLI), developing, implementing and enhancing all components of the program, including student-athlete development opportunities such as the Bloom Family Leadership Academy (BFLA), The Terrier Network, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and numerous campus partnerships.
In her role at Monmouth, Howard was responsible for student-athlete development programming for all 23 varsity sports, academic support for select sport programs, and oversight of the Monmouth Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (MSAAC). Howard also oversaw the creation and implementation of Monmouth's first-ever student-athlete mentorship program, F.L.I.G.H.T. Academy, in addition to assisting with Monmouth's Summer Bridge Program.
"I am thrilled to have Emily join our department and guide our Bloom Family Leadership Initiative," said BU senior associate director of athletics Kristie Bowers. "Through her dedication to developing student-athletes, she has distinguished herself in our industry as a rising star. Her experiences and passion will no doubt help our student-athletes, staff and coaches continue to reach new heights as a part of the Boston University community."
Prior to coming to Monmouth, Howard served the student-athletes at the University of Pennsylvania as a member of the Student Development department from 2016 to 2018. At Penn, Howard was responsible for the academic support of 11 varsity sport programs, including football and baseball, providing student development programming to all 33 varsity sports, and direct oversight of the Student-Athlete Academic Achievement program. Howard also served as co-advisor for Penn's SAAC, as well as athletics liaison to a variety of campus partners.
"I am so excited to be joining the Boston University Athletics department and working with their student-athletes, coaches and administrators," said Howard. "I look forward to continuing the Terriers' tradition of excellence in leadership and career development.
"I am extremely grateful for the people who have helped me grow and have supported me along my journey, including Dr. Marilyn McNeil, the coaches and administrators at Monmouth University, and my colleagues in N4A and Women Leaders in College Sports. I am very appreciative to have been a part of the Monmouth Athletics family, and attend incredible development opportunities like the Steve McDonnell Professional Development Institute and the Institute for Administrative Advancement."
In addition to her roles at Penn, Howard also spent three seasons as the head diving coach for Drexel University. During her tenure, Howard coached athletes who went on to earn CAA Men's Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet at the CAA Championships, CAA Diver of the Year and CAA Rookie Diver of the Year. She was also named the CAA Men's Diving Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2018.

She is a proud graduate of the 2018 N4A Steve McDonnell Professional Development Institute, Student-Athlete Development Track and the 2019 Women Leaders in College Sports Institute for Administrative Advancement East.
"The Bloom Family Leadership Initiative is an integral part of our department and we are excited for Emily to continue to enhance the programming as our new director," said BU director of athletics Drew Marrochello. "Emily's student-development background, combined with her past coaching experience, will not only impact our student-athletes positively but will be an asset for our coaches and staff as well."
