BOSTON – Looking to claim sole possession of second place in the Patriot League standings, the Boston University men's basketball team will host American on Sunday with the CBS Sports Network broadcast set to begin at 12 p.m. 

The Terriers and Eagles are currently tied at 10-5, two games behind Colgate, and have clinched a first-round bye for the upcoming 10-team PL tournament. Whoever wins Sunday's matchup will clinch a home quarterfinal contest with two games remaining. Lafayette (9-6 PL), Army West Point (9-7) and Bucknell (7-8) are looming behind.

TERRIER TIDBITS

• BU is 8-3 at home with a 5-2 conference mark, including wins over Army (81-59) and Lafayette (73-72).
• The Terriers recorded a split on the two-game road trip, first recording a 77-54 win at Navy and then a loss to the Leopards (61-59) that saw BU miss the go-ahead 3-point attempt before the buzzer.
• Both senior Max Mahoney (15.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg) and sophomore Walter Whyte (12.6 ppg, 7.2 rpg) earned a double-double at Lafayette and have combined for 11 double-doubles this season.
• Mahoney is just 35 points away from becoming the eighth Terrier to eclipse 1,500 points, while junior Javante McCoy (12.4 ppg) is four away from becoming the 39th to reach 1,000 points.
• The Terriers are 13-5 this season when outscoring opponents in the paint and 12-6 when finishing ahead in second-chance points.

• The Eagles have won four of their last five games, including most recently a 71-62 home victory over Navy but are only 5-9 on the road compared to the 9-3 home mark.
• Preseason PL Player of the Year and 6-foot-2 guard Sa'eed Nelson leads the Eagles at 18.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 4.9 apg and 2.5 spg.
• 6-foot-2 guard Jamir Harris is second in scoring at 10.8 ppg, while 6-foot-10 center Mark Gasperini is averaging 9.0 ppg with 5.1 rpg.
• American is averaging 71.6 ppg and 45.5 FG% while holding opponents to 71.2 ppg and 45.2 FG%.

SERIES HISTORY

• BU leads the all-time series, 9-8, dating back to 1997-98 but has dropped the last five games.
• Three of the five losses were decided by four points each, including AU's 67-63 win back on Jan. 5.
• In that contest, BU rallied from a 54-46 deficit to tie the game at 2:15 (59-59) before AU hit a 3-pointer to pull away.
• Nelson was one assist shy of a triple double, while McCoy had 17 points and four assists for the Terriers.
