BOSTON - Freshmen Maggie Pina (basketball) and Trevor Zegras (ice hockey) were named the Female and Male Rookies of the Year by their peers, as announced on Monday during the online ceremony for the 2019-20 Rhettys. This was a new addition to the Student-Athlete Choice Awards this year.
Pina edged fellow finalists Erica Di Battista (tennis) and Sophia Jacobs-Townsley (track & field/cross country) to become the inaugural winner of the award. The first Patriot League Rookie of the Year in program history, Pina led all PL freshmen in scoring with 11.5 points per game and finished the year with 70 made 3-pointers to set a new BU rookie record. In conference play, she averaged 13.0 points per contest and made 40 percent of her 3-point attempts.
Zegras was among the top rookie scorers in the nation all season for the Terriers and finished the year with 36 points on 11 goals and 25 assists. His point total ranked third on the team while his assist total trailed only David Farrance (29). Zegras, who signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League after the season, was named a Hockey East Third-Team All-Star and earned a spot on the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. Zegras edged Sarsen Whatmore (track & field/cross country) and Sarsen Whatmore (swimming) for the award.
