BOSTON – Led by graduate student
Javante McCoy's 27 points and classmate
Sukhmail Mathon's double-double that included a stellar performance at the free throw line, the Boston University men's basketball team claimed a 68-63 victory over Binghamton at Case Gym on Saturday afternoon.
With their sixth win in seven games, the Terriers (7-3) are off to their best start through the first 10 games of a season since the 2004-05 squad opened with an identical 7-3 record. They more than doubled the Bearcats (2-5) in rebounds, 41-20, to post a decisive 12-2 advantage in second-chance points.
McCoy finished 11-of-17 from the field and 4-of-5 in 3-point territory to become the ninth Terrier to reach 1,500 career points while adding seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Mathon hit a personal-best 14 free throws on 16 attempts en route to 16 points alongside 12 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Senior
Jonas Harper added nine points, and classmate
Fletcher Tynen contributed seven rebounds in the start.
Hakon Hjalmarsson led Binghamton with 18 points, while Taylor Bertram (14) and Dan Petcash (11) combined for 25. The Bearcats shot 54.2 FG% in the first half for a 30-27 lead but was held to 38.5 FG% in the second for the loss.
THE FINAL TWO MINUTES
- Down by as many as nine (44-35) earlier in the half, the Bearcats chipped away and eventually tied the game for the sixth and final time, 60-60, on Hjalmarsson's fourth 3-pointer at 1:44.
- On the next possession, Christian Hinckson blocked McCoy's layup attempt but the ball went straight back to McCoy, who then fed it inside to Mathon for the contested layup.
- Jacob Falko drove to the hoop for the equalizer but was forced into a tough layup attempt that went into the hands of Harper.
- McCoy all but put the game away with a pull up jumper with 20 seconds left for the 64-60 advantage.
- Binghamton missed its next two 3-point attempts, which led to four combined free throws from Mathon and Harper for the win.
THE SETUP
- McCoy, Harper and Tynen hit three consecutive buckets in the paint for an early 6-2 lead at 16:48, but Ogheneyole Akuwovo and Petcash quickly tied the game with back-to-back layups.
- Petcash later responded to Harper's 3-pointer with one of his own to grab a 20-18 lead at 10:10.
- Hjalmarsson extended the lead to 27-22 at 2:52 on his own 3-pointer, but McCoy responded with five straight points to tie the game at 22 seconds.
- Hjalmarsson broke the deadlock just before the buzzer on another 3-pointer for the 30-27 lead.
- BU came out of the locker room scoring seven points via a McCoy bomb and four free throws from Tynen and Mathon to pull ahead, 34-30.
- After Petcash drained two free throws to cut BU's lead to 36-34, freshman Malcolm Chimezie hit a hook shot to spark a 7-0 spurt capped by McCoy's jumper and 3-pointer at 12:33.
- Mathon's two free throws kept BU ahead, 52-45, with 7:25 left, but Binghamton would not back down quickly scoring four points on Hinckson's two free throws and Falko's layup.
- Bertram hit a layup with the free throw to cut the deficit to just two, 57-55, at 4:21, and Hjalmarsson later followed two Mathon free throws with a 3-pointer to tie the game.
