BOSTON – Following the postponement of four games, the Boston University men's basketball team will resume Patriot League play with a weekend series against in-state rival Holy Cross. The Terriers will visit the Hart Center on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tip and then welcome the Crusaders to The Roof Sunday evening at 5 p.m.
Through eight contests, BU is a perfect 3-0 on the road with an 83-76 season-opening win at Holy Cross and weekend sweep at Lafayette (76-71, 64-61). Currently No. 20 all-time in the program record book with 1,162 points, senior Javante McCoy leads the Terriers in road games at 15.7 ppg while adding 6.3 rpg, 2.3 apg and 1.3 bpg. Classmate Sukhmail Mathon has nearly averaged a double-double at 10.3 ppg and 8.0 rpg with 2.7 apg. Junior and 2021 Preseason All-PL Walter Whyte missed the first game against the Crusaders, but redshirt-freshman Daman Tate stepped up with a season-high 26 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for the double-double.
Overall, BU is averaging 67.8 ppg and 40.7 FG% while holding opponents to 76.4 ppg and 47.4 FG%. Hampered by injuries, the Terriers have used seven different starting lineups with 10 individuals earning at least one start and Mathon the lone player to start every contest. BU has struggled from behind the arc shooting 27.6 3FG% but has had success getting to the free throw line and earning points at 73.0 FT% compared to opponents' 64.4 FT%.
Since posting a split against Army, the Crusaders have dropped their last six games, but four of them have come against Colgate, including a 74-63 OT defeat on Jan. 30. Holy Cross also came up just short at home to Lehigh, 75-72 and 82-74. University of New Orleans transfer and former Southland Conference Freshman of the Year Gerrale Gates leads the Crusaders at 18.7 ppg and 7.9 rpg, while Austin Butler averages 13.3 ppg and 8.9 rpg. Matt Faw is also averaging double figures at 11.3 ppg while adding 6.6 rpg and 2.4 bpg. As a team, Holy Cross is averaging 69.3 ppg and 43.3 FG% with opponents averaging 79.3 ppg and 46.2 FG%.
In a series dating back to 1902-03, the Crusaders lead the all-time series, 55-24, but BU is 12-4 against Holy Cross since joining the Patriot League in the summer of 2013. Junior Jack Hemphill played a key role in the first two meetings this season, averaging 14.0 ppg by shooting a combined 4-of-6 from behind the arc. The Terriers won on the road (83-76) and were edged at home, 68-66.
