Colgate Pulls Away in Second Half to Upend Men's Basketball, 78-63

HAMILTON, N.Y. – After seeing its 13-point lead evaporate late in the first half, Colgate pulled away in the second to defeat the Boston University men's basketball team, 78-63, on Sunday afternoon.
Riding a 10-game win streak, the Raiders improve to 11-1 (11-1 PL), as the Terriers drop to 5-8 (5-8 PL). Colgate shot 59.3 percent from the field and held BU to 41.0 FG% to complete the weekend sweep.
Senior Sukhmail Mathon totaled a team-high 14 points with six rebounds, and junior Walter Whyte earned seven rebounds. Junior Jack Hemphill added nine points off the bench, while senior Javante McCoy and redshirt-freshman Daman Tate recorded eight points apiece.
Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Jordan Burns posted a game-high 15 points, seven assists and six rebounds to lead the Raiders, who went 6-of-12 from behind the arc against BU's 4-of-26 (.154) performance in 3-point territory. Colgate outscored BU in the paint, 48-34, and off the bench, 34-27.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Burns used a 3-pointer to spark a 9-2 run capped by Tucker Richardson's layup at 16:10 to start the contest.
- The Terriers eventually pulled within one on three occasions, including at 9:22 (19-18) when Whyte hit a second-chance layup.
- Richardson responded with a successful drive to the hoop, as the Raiders went on a 14-2 run over the next four minutes that finished with Oliver Lynch-Daniels' 3-pointer.
- Facing a 33-20 deficit, Hemphill ignited BU's rally with a layup and 3-pointer.
- Harper and Brittain-Watts ended the half with back-to-back steals to help the Terriers tie the game, 35-35.
- Nelly Cummings started the second with a layup set up by Richardson's steal to give Colgate the lead for good and added a free throw at 16:14 to move ahead, 43-35.
- Whyte flushed a 3-pointer to pull within five (47-42) at 12:59, but the Raiders scored 12 of the next 14 points to pull away.
- Mathon is now just nine points and 27 rebounds away from reaching 500 total in both categories.
- Harper and McCoy both had two steals, as BU finished with fewer turnovers than an opponent for the first time this season (15-10).
- Freshman Miles Brewster tallied a season-high six points with a pair of field goals on three attempts and two free throws.
- Whyte's streak with 10+ points ended at 22 games dating back to last season.
- The Terriers will return home to host the Crusaders on Wednesday (Feb. 24) at 7 p.m.
- Prior to the tip, BU will honor the three seniors – Sukhmail Mathon, Javante McCoy and Andrew Petcash.
- BU is 3-2 in the series this year and has won the last two games, 86-68 (home) and 78-69 (away).
