Terriers Take Second at Patriot League Championship
March 5, 2021 | Men's Cross Country
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Paced by top-five finishes from redshirt senior Brett Davidson and sophomore Foster Malleck, the Boston University men's cross country team finished second at the Patriot League Championship on Friday afternoon at Lehigh.
BU finished with 49 points, just eight points behind Army West Point (41 points). The Terriers and Black Knights were even through the middle portion of the race, but Army was able to hold off a late Terrier charge to capture the title. Lafayette finished third with 73 points, followed by Bucknell (86), Lehigh (109), American (167), Holy Cross (201), Colgate (222) and Loyola Maryland (236).
Davidson earned First Team All-Patriot League honors for the second straight year after his third-place performance. He crossed the line with a time of 21:57.0, just ahead of Malleck, who was fourth with a time of 21:59.8.
"Brett and Foster wanted to contend for the individual title, so I feel bad for them not obtaining that goal." Spangler said. "I'm proud of our team for hanging in there and coming on strong in the end, but it just wasn't enough. I know they're disappointed not to win."
Freshman Matthew Mason was named Outstanding Rookie of the Meet after he finished 12th with a time of 22:24.7. Mason is the third Terrier to claim that honor, joining Alexander Seal (2015) and Paul Luevano (2016).
"Matt really stepped it up today," Spangler said. "He ran well today. I thought he really outperformed the way he looked in practice."
Senior Jonathan Fierro joined Mason as a Second Team All-Patriot League honoree after he was 14th with a time of 22:30.0. Sophomore Mike Hagen took 16th with a time of 22:40.5, followed by classmate Kevin Murphy (22:57.6) in 25th. All eight Terriers that ran on Friday finished in the top 30, with sophomore Charlie Hammel (23:03.3) and senior Logan Broedner (23:03.6) crossing the line in 27th and 28th, respectively.
This was the third runner-up finish for BU since joining the Patriot League. The Terriers have finished in the top three each of the last six years.
