BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Boston University golf team was the runner-up at the 2021 Patriot League Championship, which concluded Sunday at Saucon Valley CC.
The Terriers entered Sunday tied with Navy atop the leaderboard, but the Mids combined for a 305 in the final round to finish with a score of 921 (308-308-305). BU posted a 307 on Sunday to close the tournament with a 923 (304-312-307).
Freshman Flair Kuan was terrific in the final round, as she was -4 through her first 14 holes. She was the only player to go under par on Sunday, recording a one-under 71 to finish second by just one shot with a score of 228 (80-77-71). Kuan carded five birdies in her final round, including four on the front nine, and moved up eight spots from her starting position on the leaderboard.
Sophomore Alice Fan finished third with a 54-hole score of 229 (71-82-76). She joined Kuan as the only players to post an under-par score over the weekend. Junior Hanako Kawasaki tried to rally her team over the final few holes with a birdie on 16, but she ultimately posted a 77 to tie for fourth with a score of 230 (79-74-77). Kuan, Fan and Kawasaki all earned First Team All-Patriot League honors for their performances over the weekend.
Graduate student Zhangcheng Guo tied for 11th with a score of 236 (74-79-83). She capped her terrific collegiate career as a two-time All-Patriot League honoree and was part of the Terriers' championship squad in 2019. Sophomore Monica Yu recorded a 252 (84-84-84) and classmate Kristen Min Ju Kim posted a 257 (85-84-88).
BU led all schools with 27 birdies this weekend. Fan and Kuan both made eight birdies to lead the field, with Kawasaki sinking six birdies of her own. Fan also led all players in par-4 scoring average. (4.17)
Despite the team arriving on campus for the first time during the academic year in late March, the Terriers won four of the five events they entered, with Kawasaki and Kuan both capturing individual titles. They will return all but one player from this year's team for the 2021-22 season.
