HAMILTON, N.Y. – Matching up against Colgate for the second straight time in the postseason, the Boston University women's lacrosse team got off to a hot start, but saw its lead slip as the Raiders pulled away with a 15-13 decision Monday afternoon in a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal contest at Crown Field.
The Terriers erupted out of the gates, dominating the draw and used a 5-0 run within a three-minute span to stake a 6-2 command with 22:11 left in the half.
However, the Raiders swung the momentum and used a 6-0 streak between the end of the first half and the start of the second to take a three-goal lead. BU caught fire midway through the closing frame as
Ava Barry capped a 4-0 run to put the Terriers back on top, 13-12, but Colgate closed the game with a 3-0 streak to advance to the semifinals.
How It Happened
- Makenzie Irvine drove through the crease to net the opening goal just over a minute into action, though Colgate responded with two of its own for the early edge.
- Ava Barry went top shelf on a feed from Irvine and Michelle Seger converted on a free position sling to reclaim the upper hand, 3-2.
- Ryann Gaffney streaked down the field on the ensuing draw control and five-holed the keeper, while Seger and Jennifer Barry went solo to the cage as a 5-0 streak put the score at 6-2 in favor of the Terriers.
- Irvine went for a first-half hat trick, but Colgate scored nine of the next 11 goals to take a 12-9 grip three minutes into the second stanza.
- Claire Gola got a friendly bounce to find the back of the net to snap a 6-0 Raider run..
- Kendall Sims dodged her way through the crease before Seger followed on a free position strike to cut the deficit to one, 12-11.
- Gola worked a spin move off a defender to tie the game and Ava Barry went for the low post 40 seconds later to reclaim the Terrier lead, 13-12, with 10:47 remaining.
- Colgate scored off of three turnovers down the stretch to earn its second postseason win over the Terriers.
