Terrier Twelve - #11: Men’s Rowing Wins Bronze at IRAs

July 2, 2021

Returning for a 13th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 11 is the men's rowing varsity four boat winning bronze at the IRA National Championship Regatta.

Competing in Day 1 of the IRAs, the V4 had terrific performance in its morning time trial, finishing third with a very fast time of 6:54.70 behind only national powerhouses Washington and California in a field of 20 boats to advance directly to the IRA grand final as the number 3 seed.

In the grand final race the next day, the Terriers' V4 took on Washington, California, Dartmouth, Penn, Oklahoma City and Syracuse with an IRA National Championship title on the line.

Under very rainy conditions, the BU V4, made up of Michael Boston, Alexander Dailida, Owen Loeb, Harrison Steck and Peter Adams separated early from the pack along with boats from Washington and California.

Washington and California got out to early leads but BU stayed close and the three boats battled for medal position. Washington opened up a lead for first at the midway point as the Terriers came from behind to battle California for second place. BU continued to stay even Cal and the two boats fought for silver all the way to the finish line. The Terriers came up just short in their quest for second place, finishing in third by just one tenth of a second in a very exciting race. Washington took the gold with a time of 6:59.44 with Cal in second (7:06.22) and BU in third (7:06.32.).

With its bronze-medal performance, the V4 won just the second IRA medal in BU program history and first since the second varsity eight boat brought home bronze in 2015.
