Terrier Twelve - #10: Golf Finishes Runner-Up at Patriot League Championship

July 6, 2021

Returning for a 13th year, GoTerriers.com will once again count down the top 12 achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. Check back each Tuesday and Friday as we reveal this year's Terrier Twelve.

Coming in at No. 10 is the golf team finishing runner-up at the Patriot League Championship.

It was a season unlike any other for the six Terrier golfers, as they were the last BU squad to arrive on campus, doing so in March after learning remotely from their homes around the world. Despite only being together for a short time, the Terriers got off to a blistering start, winning four of their first five events, beginning with back-to-back victories at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational and the Hartford/Tumble Brook Invitational. Junior Hanako Kawasaki also won the individual crown at Hartford.

After a third-place performance at the Sacred Heart Invitational, freshman Flair Kuan topped the field in a win over Holy Cross before BU claimed another victory at Hartford to finish the regular season. At the Patriot League Championship, the defending champion Terriers were tied atop the leaderboard after 36 holes, but despite under-par rounds from Kuan and sophomore Alice Fan, BU finished two shots back of Navy. Kuan used five birdies in the final round to finish second by just one shot, with Fan finishing third and Kawasaki taking fourth. All three earned First Team All-Patriot League honors.

Not only did the Terriers excel on the course, but they were fantastic in the classroom. Led by Kawasaki, who was named Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, BU won the department's Team GPA award thanks to a 3.70 mark. Kawasaki joined Fan on the Academic All-Patriot League Team, as BU was the only school to place two golfers on the five-player squad.

BU will once again be one of the favorites in the Patriot League in 2021-22, as the Terriers return all but one player from the 2020-21 group. Zhangcheng Guo closed her impressive collegiate career as a two-time All-Patriot League honoree who was part of the Terriers' championship squad in 2019.
