Women’s Basketball Hits The Road To Face Loyola Maryland

BOSTON, Mass. – After vanquishing Navy in its Patriot League opener, the Boston University women's basketball program looks to beat another Maryland-based school, visiting Loyola Maryland for its league road opener on Wednesday, Jan. 5. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Terriers vie for their fifth PL road opening victory in the last six seasons. BU also looks to start 2-0 in league action for the second season in a row and third time in the last four campaigns. Night games have been kind to the Terriers as well; BU is 4-0 in games tipping off after 6 p.m.in 2021-22.
Loyola Maryland will play its first Patriot League game of the season after its first two conference matchups against Army and Holy Cross were postponed due to COVID-19 protocols. All three of the Greyhounds' victories so far this year have come at home.
On Monday, the Loyola athletic department announced a limited attendance plan for men's and women's basketball games for the rest of January. Attendance will be limited to team comp lists and those already holding tickets to the games, and those attending will be required to show proof of vaccination. TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU set season-highs in scoring, made baskets, and rebounding in an 82-58 triumph over the Mids last Sunday.
- The Terriers scored 45 points in the first half, the most in a first half this season, and made 34 baskets while shooting .493 for the entire 40 minutes.
- BU also snagged 52 boards, eclipsing the 50-rebound plateau for the first time since securing 56 against Colgate back on Feb. 15, 2017.
- Freshman Alex Giannaros set career-bests with 18 points, 12 coming in the first half as she made her first four shots, and five assists in 33 minutes.
- For her efforts, she was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Jan. 3. Giannaros is the first Terrier to win a weekly award this season and under Head Coach Melissa Graves.
- Sophomore Caitlin Weimar added her first double-double as a Terrier with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while classmate Sophie Beneventine poured in a career-high 11 points.
- Junior Sydney Johnson played for the first time since Dec. 9 and chipped in 13 points. Dating back to Feb. 7, she has reached double figures in 15 of her 18 appearances. She ranks top 10 in the Patriot League in scoring average, field goal percentage, and assists per game.
- Terrier reserves accounted for a season-high 34 points against Navy. This year, BU is averaging 19.4 points per game from bench players.
- BU is the only Patriot League school to have three student-athletes averaging seven rebounds or more per game. Junior Maren Durant is seventh with 7.3 rebounds per game, senior Riley Childs is eighth with 7.2, and Weimar is 10th at 7.0.
- The Terriers went 6-1 in Patriot League road games last season. Dating back to 2019-20, BU has won nine of its last 12 PL road contests. That stretch began with a win at Loyola Maryland.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
- Loyola is 3-7 on the season and lost five of its last six games, but has not played since Dec. 11 due to COVID-19 protocols.
- The Greyhounds have beaten FDU, UMBC, and Mount St. Mary's this season.
- All five of Loyola's prominent starters average 8.8 points or better, as 83 percent of the team's offense runs through the unit.
- Taleah Dixon leads the team with 13.1 points per game, while two-time PL Rookie of the Week Lex Therien scores 10.1 points per game.
- Danielle O'Banion is in her first year as the Greyhounds' head coach.
- Last season, Loyola went 0-13 on the year, and 0-12 in PL play. The Greyhounds' last conference win came on Feb. 26, 2020.
SERIES HISTORY
- Wednesday marks the 16th all-time meeting between BU and Loyola in a series that started when the teams joined the Patriot League ahead of 2013-14.
- The Terriers lead the rivalry 9-6, having won six of the last eight matchups.
- The programs did not face off in the altered 2020-21 season. The last matchup occurred on Jan. 29, 2020, a 41-39 Terrier victory. Childs made two layups at the fourth quarter's midpoint, and BU held Loyola to 1-for-6 shooting in the final 2:26 to hang on for the win.
- The last four battles between the Terriers and Greyhounds have been decided by four points or less. BU has never allowed more than 67 points vs. Loyola.
