Women's Swimming & Diving Opens Season at Bucknell with Loyola Maryland

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Led by freshman Haley Newman's sweep in the butterfly events and a strong diving performance, the Boston University women's swimming & diving team opened the 2022-23 season Saturday afternoon with Patriot League losses to Bucknell and Loyola Maryland at Kinney Natatorium.
The Terriers fell to the Greyhounds by a score of 163-137 and to the host Bison by a score of 187-113.
Newman first won the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.87 to beat the top swimmers from both Bucknell (2:06.67) and Loyola (2:07.12) and later took first in the 100 fly by more than a second at 56.82. After finishing just 1.45 points behind Bucknell's Gina Hinthorn (248.05) in the 1-meter, junior Sumi Cameron led a Terrier 1-2-3 finish in the 3-meter at 275.40 with classmate Karina Moy (246.50) and sophomore Marina Cataldo (238.50) grabbing the other two spots.
The Terriers opened the competition in the 200 medley relay at 1:46.41 to edge out the Bison by 0.04 seconds with the Greyhounds winning the race at 1:44.94. Junior Lara Mitchell followed up on her lead-off relay performance by beating Bucknell again in the 100 back by a second at 57.64.
Junior Sydney Sorbello swam anchor in the relay win and added another victory over the Bison in the 50 free by 0.16 seconds at 24.20, just missing out on first place to the Greyhounds by 0.14 seconds.
Sophomore Ashley Scafetta swam in both the 500 and 1,000 free for the Terriers, taking second overall in the 500 at 5:12.46, four seconds behind the Bison and five seconds ahead of Loyola's top finisher. She just missed out on a top-three finish in the 1,000 free by 0.28 seconds, placing fourth at 10:42.15.
BU will next host UMass in two weeks on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 1:30 p.m.
