Army Eliminates Women's Tennis in Patriot League Final, 4-1
April 24, 2022 | Women's Tennis
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Unable to overcome a slow start in singles action, the top-seeded Boston University women's tennis team fell to No. 3 Army West Point, 4-1, in the Patriot League final on Sunday afternoon at Lehigh's Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Black Knights (25-9) won a tightly-contested doubles point and then the first set in all six singles matches before claiming the necessary three points to snap the Terriers' (14-8) nine-match win streak. BU rallied to force a third set in four contests but came up just short for the loss.
In doubles, junior Erica Di Battista and graduate student Emily Kim recorded a 6-4 win in the top slot, but the Black Knights snapped sophomore Kaitlin Tan and senior Shelly Yaloz's 12-match win streak as a duo, 6-3, at line 2. Army jumped out to the 1-0 lead by holding off sophomore Victoria Carlsten and freshman Michelle Kleynerman, 6-4, at line 3.
Army extended the lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles before freshman Sydney Sharma put BU on the scoreboard by rallying for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 slot.
The Black Knights though captured the final two points, first a 7-5, 7-5 decision at line 5 and then a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 championship-clinching victory at line 4. Both Carlsten (#1) and Tan (#2) were one game away from winning their respective singles matches when play was halted.
A two-time team captain, 2021 PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year and 2019 PL Doubles Team of the Year honoree, Kim concludes her collegiate career with an identical 63 singles and 63 doubles victories.
