WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Helped by the third varsity eight's Petite Final victory, the Boston University men's rowing team finished 10th overall in the James Ten Eyck standings at the IRA Championship Sunday morning on Lake Mercer.
Competing against 23 other crews, the Terriers finished with 169 points, just four behind Cornell and four ahead of Wisconsin with Navy (158) and Northeastern (133) taking 12th and 13th, respectively. Yale placed first at 283 points with Cal (272) and Washington (255) rounding out the top three.
BU had three boats take to the water Sunday with the second varsity eight also racing in a Petite Final, recording a fourth-place result. The varsity eight boat finished runner-up in its 3rd Level Final.
The 3V8 boat coxed by
Peter Adams and stroked by
Owen Loeb led by more than a second through the first 500 meters and never trailed the rest of the way to win its Petite Final at 6:12.005 and finish seventh overall by 2.4 seconds ahead of Princeton (6:14.419). Navy took third at 6:15.959 with Syracuse, Cornell and Penn rounding out the list.
In the other Petite Final, the 2V8 boat coxed by
Matt Murphy and stroked by
Harrison Steck was in fifth at the midway point. The Terriers though earned the fastest split over the next 500 meters out of the six boats to overtake Cornell and place fourth at 6:11.863, 1.8 seconds behind Wisconsin (6:09.997) and 2.5 seconds ahead of the Big Red (6:14.405). Harvard won at 6:02.389 ahead of Syracuse (6:07.223).
During the 3rd Level Final race, the V8 coxed by
William Mulhall and stroked by
Bowen de Gouw faced an early deficit against Stanford with Drexel just 0.1 second behind through the first 500 meters. The Terriers and Cardinal pulled away from the other crews and battled back and forth to the end with BU coming up 2.2 seconds short at 5:59.464 with Penn finishing third at 6:01.342. Drexel took fourth ahead of Temple and Columbia.
