BU Tops Colgate For Fifth Straight Win, 72-51

BOSTON - Senior Maren Durant recorded an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double, classmate Maggie Pina added 12 points, and the Boston University women's basketball program captured its fifth-consecutive victory with a 72-51 triumph over Colgate on Wednesday evening at Case Gym.

BU (10-6, 5-0 PL) set season-bests with a .519 field goal percentage and only eight turnovers, leading for over 36 minutes of the game. Colgate (9-7, 3-2 PL) saw its three-game winning streak come to end in a game where the Raiders shot just 37.7 percent from the field.

In addition to her double-double, Durant also collected five assists, two blocks, and two steals. All 12 of Pina's points came on four three-pointers. Senior Sydney Johnson totaled nine points, five assists, and four steals with zero turnovers.

Madison Schiller compiled 15 points and six rebounds to pace Colgate. Morgan McMahon notched 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Alex Giannaros scored five of BU's first nine points on a corner three-pointer and a layup, as both sides traded buckets in the opening five minutes.
  • With 2:22 to play in the quarter, freshman Sam Crispe converted underneath while drawing the foul, completing the nostalgic three-point play to put the Terriers ahead 19-13.
  • BU led 22-15 after the opening 10 minutes, capping the first on a triple from junior Sophie Beneventine.
  • The Terriers took an 11-point lead 1:15 into the second after layups from sophomore Lauren Davenport and Durant.
  • Colgate cut the gap to 26-21 on threes from Schiller and Taylor Golembiewski, but an 8-0 Terrier run powered on triples from Pina and Johnson extended BU's advantage to 34-21 with 4:30 until halftime.
  • McMahon nailed consecutive threes for Colgate, but Durant scored four-straight points to help buoy BU's edge to 38-29 at halftime.
  • Durant started the third quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play, kickstarting a 15-4 Terrier burst that led to a 53-33 advantage.
  • With 1:55 remaining in the stanza, Beneventine nailed her second three-pointer to make it 58-39.
  • Senior Liz Shean hit a pair of threes as part of an 8-0 BU spurt to ignite the fourth. Colgate's first points of the quarter didn't come until Jenna Paul's jumper at the 5:52 mark.
  • The Terriers led by as much as 24 with 1:06 to play, as junior Kelsi Mingo drained a three near the top of the arc.
 
STATS
  • BU tied a season-high with 11 three-pointers, shooting over 52 percent from downtown. Six different Terriers nailed a three.
  • Colgate was held to just 6-of-18 shooting from distance.
  • The Terriers accrued 19 assists on 28 made baskets.
  • In addition to Durant, Giannaros and Crispe also dished out five assists, the latter setting a career-high.
  • BU also edged out Colgate in rebounding, 31-28.
  • Nine different Terriers scored, with seven tallying six or more points.
 
GAME NOTES
  • Durant's double-double is her second of the season and ninth in her career.
  • The Winchester, Mass. native also now has 46 career games with multiple blocks.
  • Pina's four threes gives her 15 career games with four-plus makes from behind the arc. She has registered double digits in her last three games after a four-game drought in that category.
  • Johnson now has eight games this season with four or more assists. Wednesday was her first since Nov. 23 against St. Francis Brooklyn where she totaled five or more assists without a turnover.
  • In six starts this year, Crispe is shooting over 48 percent from the field. All seven of her points on Wednesday came in the first quarter.
  • Beneventine hit multiple three-pointers in a game for the first time in her career.
  • Entering the game as the third-best three-point shooting team in the country in terms of percentages, the Terriers have made 42 percent of their triples this season.
  • BU's five-game winning streak is the longest of the season. Its average margin of victory during the run is 18.6 points.
  • The Terriers improve to 17-9 all-time against Colgate, having won five of the last six contests.
