Newman Claims 400 IM Crown on Day 3 of PL Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Haley Newman led the way for the Boston University women's swimming & diving team on day three of the Patriot League Championships as the freshman won the 400-yard individual medley title at Bucknell's Kinney Natatorium on Friday.
Newman won the final by more than three seconds, posting a time of 4:16.04, which is just a half-second off the school record. Her win added 20 points to the team total as the Terriers moved back into fourth place in the meet standings.
Junior Lara Mitchell was runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke, improving one place from last year with a time of 54.58 to collect 17 points. Classmate Sydney Sorbello took sixth (56.47) to earn 13 points while sophomore Alex Pastushan secured four points with a fifth-place finish (57.54) in the consolation.
Five Terriers earned points in the consolation final of the 100-yard butterfly as sophomore Keilah Eckhart was first in a time of 55.66 while juniors Madison Kim (55.94) and Clarissa Hoyt (56.17) were third and fourth, respectively. Sophomore Sasha Ramey took sixth (56.38) and Pastushan was eighth (56.97).
Hoyt scored again later in the evening when she placed fourth in the B final of the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:04.15. Freshman Stella Langenbach qualified for the B final of the 200-yard freestyle and was 15th overall (1:51.94) to collect a pair of points.
The 200-yard freestyle relay reached the podium with a third-place finish. Newman, Sorbello, junior Blythe Brenner and Mitchell posted a 1:32.99 to come close to the school record of 1:32.48.
The fourth and final day of the PL Championships will take place on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
