Doldron Promoted to Director of Women's Rowing

June 21, 2023

BOSTON - Malcolm Doldron, who has led the Boston University women's lightweight rowing program since its inception in 2012, has been promoted to the director of women's rowing at BU, as announced by director of athletics Drew Marrochello on Wednesday.

Doldron quickly made BU a consistent contender on the lightweight scene, guiding the Terriers to six national runner-up finishes, including each of the past two seasons. In addition to 17 years of coaching experience at the collegiate level, Doldron also has been involved with the USRowing U23 National Team for several years.

"We are proud to announce that Malcolm will serve as our new director of women's rowing after his exemplary tenure leading our lightweight program," said Marrochello. "His efforts turned us into a national contender, and we look forward to having him in the director role, leading our openweight program while overseeing the lightweights.

"Malcolm's dedication to his student-athletes and their growth both on and off the water has been a correlation to their success. It's been a pleasure seeing him grow as a coach and mentor here at BU over the past 12 years and we know that he'll build on the progress that's been made as we look to add to the proud history of BU women's rowing."

Doldron came to BU in 2011 as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the women's openweight program. Just one year later, he was named the Terriers' first-ever lightweight head coach.

During his tenure with the lightweights, Doldron led BU to 16 combined medals at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship Regatta, winning three national titles in the women's lightweight double sculls (2016, 2019, 2021). His teams have finished runner-up at the IRA National Championship Regatta in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2023. Along with the IRA success, Doldron has led the Terriers to Eastern Sprints team titles 2016 and 2019, six straight Beanpots against Charles River rivals Harvard-Radcliffe and MIT, and the program's first-ever No. 1 national ranking in 2018.

Last week Doldron was named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Lightweight National Coach of the Year and his staff was named the Lightweight National Staff of the Year.

"I want to thank Drew Marrochello, Brittany Kane and Kristie Bowers for entrusting me with this tremendous opportunity," said Doldron. "It's been an honor to work at a University whose administration is dedicated to nurturing student-athletes as they pursue excellence both academically and athletically. I also want to express my sincere gratitude to Madeline Davis Tully for her remarkable stewardship of the program for the last six years. I am eager to build upon the foundation she's laid for BU Women's Rowing, and to accelerate the forward momentum of both the open and lightweight programs."

From 2017-20 Doldron served as director of the USRowing Under-23 Lightweight Women's Selection Camp in Boston, which selected crews to race at the FISA Under-23 World Rowing Championships. During his tenure, Doldron coached a total of nine crews in international competition, capturing three medals along the way.

At the 2018 Under-23 World Championships in Poznan, Poland, Doldron coached the U.S. lightweight women's pair, which included BU's Sarah Maietta (CAS'20), to a gold medal. A year later at the 2019 Under-23 Worlds in Sarasota, Florida, Doldron and Maietta returned in the lightweight women's pair to win silver behind Italy. At the same regatta, Doldron guided the U23 lightweight women's quadruple sculls to a bronze medal, which was their first medal in a decade.

In addition to his coaching credentials, Doldron is a member of USRowing's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee and serves on the board of directors for both the Head of the Charles Regatta and Community Rowing, Inc. in Brighton. Outside of the rowing world, Doldron is an elected official in the Massachusetts Town of Brookline and is a former commissioner in Brookline's Committee for Diversity, Inclusion & Community Relations.

Prior to joining BU's staff, he spent four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Columbia, helping the program achieve a CRCA/USRowing top 20 ranking for the first time ever in 2011.

During the summers of 2009 and 2010, Doldron also served as head coach of the USRowing Under-23 and Senior Women's Development Camp at the Penn Athletic Club. In both years, Doldron guided Penn AC to the Marion D. Ventura Women's Points Trophy at the USRowing Club National Championships, winning seven event titles along the way.

Doldron joined Columbia after spending two seasons with Princeton as a volunteer assistant. While with the Tigers, he guided the varsity A four boat to a 25-2 record and a third-place finish at the 2007 Eastern Sprints. The crew went on to finish fourth at the NCAA Championship.

From 1999 to 2005, Doldron returned to his high school alma mater to serve as the head coach at West Potomac. During his tenure he led the program to numerous medals at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta, Scholastic Nationals and the Virginia State Championships.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Doldron was a standout coxswain recruit at Marietta College, where he earned a B.A. in psychology and education. He holds a USRowing Advanced and Level 3 coaching certification.

Doldron resides in Brookline with his wife, Cecilia.
