June 29, 2023

BOSTON – Sisters Lilli and Louisa Welcke, who earned Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team honors last year at Maine, have joined the Boston University women's ice hockey program for the 2023-24 season.

The Heidelberg, Germany, natives made an immediate impact as freshmen in 2022-23, combining for 43 points for the Black Bears. They both have three years of eligibility remaining.

"I am thrilled that Lilli and Luisa Welcke decided on Boston University as the place they want to be this coming season," said head coach Tara Watchorn. "Having a locker room with young women from all over the world is important to us and we are excited for what they are going to bring to our group both on and off the ice. Lilli and Luisa are dynamic young players with international experience and a great freshman season under their belt. We're excited to see what they are going to do as Terriers."

Luisa finished second on Maine's squad with 22 points on eight goals and 14 assists while Lilli was tied for third with 21 on the strength of a team-best 15 assists.

The twin sisters played for Germany at the 2022 IIHF Women's World Championship and Luisa also participated in this year's tournament. They won IIHF Division I gold with the U18 national team and played three seasons together in the Frauen-Bundesliga along with their older sister, Lea. Prior to Maine, Lilli and Luisa played for Ridley College in Ontario.

The Terriers now have three of the seven members of last year's Hockey East All-Rookie Team as Brooke Disher was also honored after her standout freshman season. All three were unanimous selections.
