Rowing Programs Primed For 59th Head Of The Charles Regatta
October 18, 2024 | Men's Rowing, Women's Rowing, Women's Lightweight Rowing
BOSTON – The Boston University men's, women's openweight, and women's lightweight rowing programs are prepared to compete at the 59th Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) this weekend. In total, the teams will have 14 crews featuring current student-athletes, and 23 total boats with BU representation, traverse the three-mile course along the Charles River from Oct. 18-20, with the Terriers' DeWolfe Boathouse once again serving as the official start line.
Since its inception in 1965, the Head of the Charles Regatta annually attracts more than 11,000 athletes competing in more than 2,000 boats to the banks of the Charles River. This year features 73 events, beginning with the Senior/Grand Veteran Singles on Friday (Oct. 18) at 7:45 a.m. For a map of where to watch along the course, click here.
BU HOCR RACE SCHEDULE
Friday (Oct. 18)
BU Men's Rowing has its eyes on another strong season after its third-consecutive season placing 10th at the IRA Championship back in June. All three Varsity 8 crews advanced to the Petite Finals in the event. Maxwell Kreutzelman and returning sophomore Jan Koska were tabbed Empacher-IRCA All-Americans, while senior Tucker Thomas was selected as the IRCA Comeback Athlete of the Year.
This weekend, the Terriers will send out five total crews, including a Club Four and two Club Eights on Saturday (Oct. 19) in addition to the standard Championship Four and Eight on Sunday (Oct. 20). The Club 4+ and 8+ "A" crew were third and fifth, respectively, at last year's HOCR, while the Championship 4+ took sixth.
"The team loves to row in the Head of the Charles," said Bohrer in an interview with Good Morning BU that aired on Friday (Oct. 18). "It's the biggest rowing regatta in the world… This is racing we take seriously with it being here in Boston. It's important for us to feel like we have a good performance (over the weekend)."
WOMEN'S ROWING
BU Women's Rowing is fresh off its third Patriot League championship after all three crews swept the Grand Finals for the first time since the Terriers joined the conference. BU also appeared in the 2024 NCAA Championships, finishing 19th overall, and the Henley Royal Regatta over the summer. The program is in the midst of its 50th anniversary, and held a reunion weekend earlier in October to celebrate the program's elevation to a varsity sport.
The Terriers will launch four boats; the Club Four and Eight race on Saturday (Oct. 19), while the Championship Four and Eight will be on Sunday (Oct. 20). The former three crews posted top-15 results in their respective entries in the 2023 HOCR.
"Competing at the Head of the Charles is always a special opportunity for both our current team and our alumnae," said Director of Women's Rowing Malcolm Doldron. "It's a chance to race on our home course against some of the best crews in the world while showcasing the tradition and strength of BU Women's Rowing. It's a unique opportunity to challenge ourselves, and I have no doubt our crews will step up and represent BU with the grit and confidence that has defined this program for the last 50 years."
LIGHTWEIGHT ROWING
BU Lightweight Rowing also enjoyed a trip to England over the summer, competing in the Henley Women's Regatta. That followed a spring campaign where the Terriers captured third at the IRA Championship on Lake Mercer. The Double captured the national title for the fourth gold medal in the event in program history, while the Four was the runner-up. Earlier in the season, BU won the Konrad Ulbrich Team Trophy at the Eastern Sprints.
Five crews will traverse the Charles River for the lightweight program. A pair of doubles race on Saturday (Oct. 19), while the Lightweight 8+ and two Fours compete the next day. Among the highlights at last year's HOCR was a silver medal for the 8+ and the team' first-ever bronze in the 2x.
"The Head of the Charles brings such great energy to Boston, and we love welcoming parents, alumni, and friends to the DeWolfe Boathouse," said Head Coach Mary Foster. "The team has been focused and competitive throughout the fall season, and we're looking forward to fast racing this weekend."
