Terriers Close Out 62-55 Win Over River Hawks

LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Allison Schwertner tallied her first collegiate double-double as one of three Terriers to score in double figures, powering the Boston University women's basketball program to a 62-55 victory over UMass Lowell on Thursday evening at the Costello Athletic Center.

Shooting just 33 percent in the game entering the fourth quarter, BU (5-4) dropped 21 points in the final frame and outscored the River Hawks (2-9) by 10, leading to the Terriers' second consecutive road win.

Schwertner finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks. Senior Alex Giannaros collected 13 points, five boards and four steals, while sophomore Bella McLaughlin notched 10 points.

Abbey Lindsey paced UMass Lowell with 12 points on just 4-of-17 shooting off the bench. Maddie Rice added 11 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

BU scored the first six points of the game, with sophomore Sisi Bentley and Schwertner finding baskets six feet within the cup in the opening 3:07.
Sophomore Inés Monteagudo Pardo knocked down a right-wing three-pointer and senior Natalie Jasper made a pair of free throws to put BU on top 15-8 after one quarter.
Giannaros drove down the right lane for a layup to open the second frame, but UMass Lowell rode a 12-0 run over the next minutes to take a 20-17 lead.
The River Hawks led by as many as six points before Giannaros' jumper and junior Anete Adler's third-chance putback pulled the Terriers within 24-22 at halftime.
BU made four of its first six shots to open the third quarter. Schwertner's layup at the 6:45 mark put the visitors in front, 32-31.
The Terriers rode a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead before Tasha Lima's three and Rayne Durant's jumper knotted the score at 36-36 halfway through the stanza.
After Adler's turnaround shot brought BU within one, Rice's tip-in and Lindsey's free throws extended UMass Lowell's advantage to 44-39 with 36 seconds left in the quarter.
On its first possession in the fourth quarter, McLaughlin's drove down the right lane for a layup after Schwertner's offensive rebound. On the next possession, Schwertner completed a three-point play on another second chance to give BU a 46-45 lead 1:24 into the stanza.
The duo accounted for the first 11 points in the fourth quarter, with McLaughlin's layup at the 4:45 mark following Giannaros' steal making it 52-49 in BU's favor.
Sophomore Audrey Ericksen sandwiched Lindsey's midrange jumper with four free throws to nurse a three-point Terrier lead as the clock dwindled under three minutes.
Durant cut the gap to two after a free throw, but Giannaros zipped through the right lane for a layup that gave BU a 58-54 advantage with 1:08 remaining in regulation, allowing the Terriers to ice the rest of the game on foul shots.

STATS

BU shot 6-for-11 in the fourth quarter, finishing the game shooting 37.5 percent from the field.
UMass Lowell made just over 37 percent of its shots as well.
Both teams combined for just four three-pointers on 24 attempts.
The Terriers set season bests with 15 offensive rebounds and 44 total caroms.
That translated to 17 second chance points for BU.
BU outscored UMass Lowell in the paint, 36-32.

NOTES

Schwertner's double-double is the first for a Terrier this season. She joins junior Anastasiia Semenova as the two Terriers on the roster to record one in their careers.
Giannaros surpassed Nia Irving '20 to move into 20th place in program history, and now sports 1,098 career points.
McLaughlin scored six of her 10 points in the fourth quarter, and eight in the second half.
Bentley made her first career start, setting a career high with seven rebounds.
The Terriers have won five in a row over the River Hawks, improving to 8-2 in the rivalry.
