Women’s Basketball Heads To Colgate For PL Semifinals On Thursday

March 13, 2024

BOSTON – With a Patriot League championship game appearance on the line, the third-seeded Boston University women's basketball program returns to Hamilton, N.Y. for the second time in a week, visiting No. 2 Colgate in the Patriot League semifinal round on Thursday (Mar. 14). Opening tip at Cotterell Court is set for 6 p.m.

BU (19-11), the 2022-23 Patriot League regular season champion and tournament runner-up, seeks its second-consecutive appearance in the final, and third in the previous four seasons.

Colgate (18-12) captured its highest finish in the Patriot League since the 2003-04 campaign, when it won its first title. The Raiders are playing in their first semifinal since 2013.

TERRIER TIDBITS
  • BU is 2-1 all-time in the Patriot League semifinals, all occurring in the previous three seasons.
  • The Terriers have advanced to the semifinals in five-consecutive years. This includes 2020, when the semifinal was not played due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • No. 3 BU defeated sixth-seeded Army West Point 64-62 in the quarterfinal round on Monday (Mar. 11) at Case Gym.
  • The Terriers overcame an 11-point, first-half deficit, shooting 49 percent in the game.
  • Patriot League Player and Defensive Player of the Year Caitlin Weimar posted 27 points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, including the game-winning layup from freshman Audrey Ericksen's pass with 1.5 seconds remaining.
  • Sophomore Anastasiia Semenova added 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
  • Surpassing 200 field goals and 300 rebounds in 2023-24 in the effort, Weimar joins Debbie Miller-Palmore as the only two Terriers in program history to reach those feats in the same year.
  • Freshman Aoibhe Gormley sports a 3:1 assist/turnover ratio since Jan. 17.
  • Three different Terriers have eclipsed 80 assists this season: junior Alex Giannaros (84), senior Sophie Beneventine (82), and Gormley (80). That is a first in BU's Patriot League tenure.
  • Giannaros currently ranks 12th in the nation with a .432 three-point percentage. Her 67 triples this year is tied for the seventh-most in a single season in the Terrier annals.
SCOUTING COLGATE
  • The Raiders advanced after a 69-64 home triumph over No. 7 Navy on Mar. 11.
  • Colgate overcame a 19-point deficit as Alexa Brodie and Taylor Golembiewski each eclipsed 1,000 career points.
  • That duo captured Second Team All-Patriot League honors, with Brodie adding an All-Defensive accolade as well.
  • Golembiewski leads the team with 12.3 points per game, with Brodie (10.6) and Tiasia McMillan (10.5 on 50.7 percent shooting) joining her in double figures.
  • Colgate seeks its second Patriot League championship in program history, and first since 2004.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Thursday marks the 30th all-time meeting between BU and Colgate in a series that began in 1989.
  • The Terriers sport a 19-10 edge in the rivalry, having won seven of the last nine contests.
  • In the Patriot League Tournament, Colgate won the lone matchup in 2015 as a 7-seed, a 58-48 result over No. 10 BU.
  • This season, both teams split the regular season series with home wins. the Raiders captured a 77-40 triumph on Mar. 6, while BU was victorious on Jan. 20, 73-66.
  • In those two games, Weimar averaged 21.5 points and 2.5 blocks. Giannaros averaged 15 points and four assists.
LOOKING AHEAD
  • The winner of Thursday's tilt plays the winner between No. 1 Holy Cross and fourth-seeded Loyola Maryland in the Patriot League Championship on Sunday (Mar. 17) at Noon. The game airs on CBS Sports Network.
  • A BU victory paired with a Crusader win means the Terriers travel to Worcester for the final. Otherwise, BU would host the Greyhounds at Case Gym. The same applies for the Raiders should they advance.
