BOSTON – The Boston University men's rowing program wrapped up its dual race against crosstown rival Northeastern with two wins in the Third and Fourth Varsity 8 races on Saturday morning on the Charles River.
Scattered showers cleared out early in the morning, with minimal wind conditions creating calmer waters.
The morning began with the Varsity 8 in a battle for the Arlett Cup. BU's 13th-ranked crew, coxed by Jimmy Smith and stroked by
Ali El Sayed, jumped out to a two-seat lead in the opening 250 meters. However, No. 6 Northeastern made its move afterwards to take a full-length lead at the Mass. Ave Bridge. The Huskies triumphed in a time of 5:59.0, while the Terriers finished in 6:06.1.
BU's Second Varsity 8, coxed by
Emily Slawin and stroked by
Bowen de Gouw, trailed early but went up two seats after the first 1,000 meters. Northeastern caught up at MIT's boathouse, and used a final push in the last 500 meters to win in 6:00.1, beating out the Terriers' 6:02.8.
The Terriers' Third Varsity 8, coxed by
Hannah Noguchi and stroked by
Hurst Thompson, built out a full-length lead in the opening half of the race, gradually gaining open water to finish first with a time of 6:10.7. The Huskies crossed the line in 6:17.5.
In the Fourth Varsity 8, the Terriers, coxed by
Luke Stroh and stroked by
Seamus Dallman, BU and Northeastern stayed even after a minute before the Terriers broke out in front. Ahead by a full length after the Mass. Ave. Bridge, BU finished first by one length of open water at 6:16.4, with the Huskies crossing in 6:22.6.
BU turns its attention to races against Temple, Holy Cross, and Marist on Saturday (April 20) on Lake Quinsigamond.
